Good relationship counselling could be the reason why divorce rates in England and Wales have dropped to their lowest level in nearly 30 years, according to a top divorce lawyer. Family lawyer Martin Loxley said: "Although the majority of people who contact a lawyer with marital problems go on to divorce their partner at some stage, we have seen an increase in the number marriages saved through relationship counselling and therapy." In 2008, the divorce rate in England and Wales decreased by 2.5 per cent to 11.5 divorcing people per 1,000 married people, compared with 11.8 in 2007, figures from the National Office for Statistics showed. The 2008 divorce rate in England and Wales was the lowest since 1979, when there were 11.2 divorces per 1,000 married people, prompting analysts to suggest that this could be the result of better Relationship Counselling. However, Sue Terry from the Bournemouth-based relationship counselling service New Horizons said that although the figures appeared to be positive they were probably not representative of the reality for families. “These figures only relate to couples who have actually tied the knot over the last thirty years, and in that time we have become much more tolerant as a society of partners co-habiting outside marriage.” She said. “I am delighted that some commentators are suggesting that relationship counselling has brought about this improvement, but we should be very cautious in how we interpret this news." “I would very much like to know how many serious relationships where couples are co-habiting have failed during the same period – that would give us a far more accurate picture of the state of people’s relationships.” She added. A recent survey by the relationship counselling organisation Relate showed that eighty per cent of respondents, who wanted to save their relationship, felt that relationship counselling had helped.
