The Importance Advantages and Alternatives of Maintaining Your Pelvic Floor Health

Health
A common and often immediate effect of damaged or out of condition Pelvic Floor Muscles is a significant reduction in sexual achievement. Long term effects can be more serious and lead to embarrassing urinary incontinence which itself is a massive problem throughout the UK.

67% of female incontinence is caused through childbirth. Large babies and caesareans births cause even more damage to muscle fibres and sensory nerves. Restoring Pelvic Floor Muscle condition, and in some cases sensory nerve conduction to its former strength, is best achieved by EMG Biofeedback to support physical pelvis floor exercises and or Electronic Muscle Stimulation that performs these pelvic floor exercises for you. These electronic forms of treatment are highly effective and have no side effects.

Although normally associated with females a surprising number of males also suffer this embarrassing complaint. The advice we give to our male patients is (with a little imagination) identical to the advice we give to females. Physical pelvic floor exercises are much the same and our electronic solutions can also be applied to male patients.

Urinary Incontinence comes in several forms :- Genuine Stress, Urge, Frequency, Weak Pelvic Muscle, Pain Syndrome, Lack Of Sensitivity, Pain or any combination of these conditions. They can all have a profound effect on your quality of life.

There are four alternatives to treating these conditions:

Kegel pelvic floor exercises are taught and promoted in every maternity unit and they're the basic weapon of every urinary incontinence clinic. Performed properly and regularly over a period of several weeks they can be effective. However it's surprisingly difficult to focus physical pelvic floor exercises correctly. They're boring to do and most women simply give up trying long before any effect is achieved.

Surgery is the very last choice as this treatment is invasive, takes time to heal and more often than not creates other complications.

Drugs are expensive and often cause unwanted side effects. Some drugs are only effective while being taken.

Electronic Muscle Stimulation (EMS) has no side effects, is easy to fit into your normal daily routine and is usually regarded as being pleasant to administer. EMS provides precisely controlled and focussed pelvic floor exercises. EMS has a very positive track record for restoring pelvic floor health, improving sexual experience and, importantly, avoiding (or curing existing) urinary incontinence.

Pelvic Floor Exercises

Here we have a selection pelvic floor exercises that you can try for yourself. It is important to incorporate these pelvic floor exercises into a regular exercise regime for the best effects.

Pelvic Tilt – you will need to stand against a flat piece of wall. Your shoulders and bottom should be just touching the wall. Now let your knees soften slightly. Pull your stomach muscles in so that your back pushes flat against the wall. Hold this pose for 4 seconds and then release and return to the starting position. Repeat this 10 times.

- Pelvic Squeezes (women) – you can do these squeezes sitting, standing or lying down. All you need to do is squeeze the muscles in urethra and vagina as if you where stopping the flow of urine. Hold this for 5 seconds and then take a 5 second break. Repeat 10 times, 3 times a day. When you get more practised at this you can increase to holding for 10 seconds and then 30 seconds at a time. This floor exercise can be difficult to get the hang of at first. This is because the muscles in the urethra, vagina and anus feel very similar. You can get special pelvic floor toners which fit inside the vagina. These help you to identify the right muscles for your floor exercises.

- Pelvic Squeezes (men) – men can also do pelvic squeezes to strengthen their internal muscles. To find the right muscle try stopping the flow of urine the next time you go to the toilet. You can also tell if you are squeezing the right muscle as your testicles should rise slightly when the muscle is contracted. Now to exercise the muscle you need to squeeze and hold for 5 seconds. Rest for 5 seconds. Now repeat 10 times, 3 times a day. As with the women’s exercises increase the squeeze time to 10 seconds and 30 seconds when you are more practiced.

Pelvic floor exercises can help you to strengthen your body. This can assist the vital natural functions in your body to perform effectively. Pelvic floor exercises can help to prevent embarrassing problems such as incontinence and frequent urination.
