www.noxzema.com/ Noxzema (pronounced /nksim/ nok-SEE-m) is a skin cleanser marketed by Alberto-Culver. Alberto-Culver bought the rights to the brand in 2008 from Procter & Gamble and now owns and operates the line of skin-care products. Before Alberto-Culver's purchase, Procter & Gamble acquired the brand in 1989 as part of the acquisition of the Noxell Corporation, the Maryland-based company headed at that time by the grandson of the brand's original inventor. Since 1914, it has been sold in a small cobalt blue jar. Noxzema contains camphor, menthol, and eucalyptus, among other ingredients. Originally developed as a sunburn remedy, it is popular among women as a facial cleanser and make-up remover. It can also be used for cleaning chapped, sunburned, or otherwise irritated skin. Since the introduction of Noxzema, the brand name has appeared on shaving cream, razors, and skin-cleansing cloths. History The Noxzema Story, with its many almost legendary qualities, has been enthusiastically recorded and annotated over the years because it represents so well the spirit and the qualities that have made the American brand of free enterprise one of the marvels of this age. It involves the idea of one family as the genesis of a new product; the labor of forming and financing a company to manufacture that product; the effort - halting at first - to develop new markets; the buoyancy that comes from the discovery of new applications and the stability that builds with the launching of new lines. Finally, the Noxzema Story represents the evolution of an efficient corporate structure which permits a breakaway into new and almost unlimited business opportunities. That family of entrepreneurs started with Dr. George A. Bunting, and the product was, of course, Noxzema Skin Cream. In 1914, Dr. Bunting was a practicing pharmacist whose drugstore was located at 6 West North Avenue in Baltimore. Back in his prescription room, Dr. Bunting had developed a combination of medication and the then new "vanishing cream," designed as a treatment for sunburn. Appropriately enough, it was called "Dr. Bunting's Sunburn Remedy" and samples were always available on the drugstore counter. A customer once tried some of the new concoction on his eczema and with great satisfaction announced to Dr. Bunting: "Your cream knocked my excema." This opened up broad new possibilities for the product and also inspired the name - Noxzema. From that point on, Dr. Bunting devoted his considerable energies to exploring these new possibilities as the foundation for his fledgling business enterprise. Such was his devotion, in fact, that patrons of the store joked about the poor service they received as Dr. Bunting spent more and more time in the back of the store mixing, heating and pouring Noxzema from a large coffee pot into the first blue jars. In 1917, the Noxzema Chemical Company was founded with sales of $5,214 and four employees. Demand for the product grew over time. An early slogan was he miracle cream of Baltimore". In 1920 the first Noxzema Chemical Company factory was opened in Baltimore. A larger factory was built in the Hamden neighborhood of Baltimore in 1926 and expanded in the late 1940s. In 1949, G. Lloyd Bunting, the founder's son, assumed leadership of Noxzema Chemical Co. Lloyd Bunting's vision for the future of the company led to the hiring of a new team that within the next decade would successfully develop Cover Girl. In the 1950s, Noxzema Chemical Co. diversified into other personal care products such as shave cream, suntan lotion and cold cream. In 1961, the Cover Girl line was launched nationally and became an immediate success. The company changed its name to Noxell Corporation in 1966, at which time there were 400 employees and sales of over $38 million. Also in 1966, the headquarters were moved to the Baltimore suburb of Hunt Valley, Maryland In 1973, the founder's grandson, George L. Bunting, Jr. became President and guided this publicly traded company for more than 25 years. In 1989 Noxell Corporation had annual sales of over $550 million.
