Working in aviation doesn’t just have to mean becoming a pilot. Although it is a wonderful option, there are also other opportunities for those who are fascinated by planes and aviation. At Centennial College you have the option of attending three aviation programs, which are suited to totally different interests. All three of Centennial College’s aviation programs fall under the umbrella of The School of Transportation. This renowned school is housed in the largest onsite transportation training facility in Canada — Ashontee Campus. Not only are the aviation options conducted out of state-of-the-art facilities, complete with a fully equipped hangar, faculty members who are among the most highly skilled in the industry lead them. Each aviation program has a unique focus in a different area of aviation. Let’s take a closer look at each of Centennial College’s aviation programs. One aviation program option at Centennial College is the Aviation Technician – Avionics Maintenance program. Taking two years to complete, it results in an Ontario College Diploma. In order to apply, please check the requirements on the admission information page of this aviation program. The undertaking is designed to prepare bench technicians for work in avionic-approved shops and aircraft manufacturing companies. It is both Transport Canada approved and Canadian Aviation Maintenance Council certified as a recognized avionics maintenance-training program. Students learn all about, and develop skills in, basic electronics and sophisticated avionic systems used in modern aircraft. The aircraft’s various electronic systems are examined, including: electrical power distribution and control, navigation, flight instrumentation, communication and radar. If your interest lies more in maintenance than electronics, Centennial College offers an Aviation Technician – Aircraft Maintenance program. This option takes two years to complete as well and students graduate with an Ontario College Diploma. As with the Avionics option, this aviation program is also approved by Transport Canada approved and certified by the Canadian Aviation Maintenance Council as a recognized aircraft maintenance-training program. Students of this aviation program study aircraft maintenance, power plant structures, inspections, troubleshooting, mechanical, electrical and electronic applications. Also emphasized is the repair of a wide range of electrical and mechanical systems within an aircraft including: hydraulics, fuels, environmental systems, engines, surface controls and undercarriage systems, and the aircraft’s frame and external skin. Aviation maintenance servicing practices and procedures as well as aviation regulation requirements, round out student training. The final aviation program option at Centennial College is the Professional Pilot Training program. This unique undertaking is actually a collaboration between Centennial College and Durham Flight Centre, which is where students obtain flight practice. Students must maintain a grade average of 70 per cent and are required to successfully complete all ground school flight training requirements of the Private Pilot Phase within a certain time frame to go into the next program phase. The next phase of this aviation program is the Commercial Pilot Phase. In this portion, students must maintain a 75 per cent average and are again required to complete all ground school and flight training requirements to move onto the last phase: Multi Engine IGF Rating. This phase requires a 75 per cent and all ground school and flight training requirements to also be completed within a certain timeframe. As a student of this aviation program, students will develop skills to pursue careers in various sectors of the industry, including: airline pilot, private aircraft pilot and flight instructor.
