Carlo Ponti filmed some of the first ‘spaghetti westerns’ in Lanzarote in the early 60s and it seems that the spirit of the wild west hasn’t completely gone yet. A popular tourist attraction of the area is The Rancho Texas Park and many tourists at Lanzarote hotels make sure they do not miss it. It’s been described as where the American Wild West meets the exciting night life of Lanzarote. There is literally something for everyone and all you expect from a western style rodeo including horse riding, games, a zoo full of animals and for the youngsters, a bouncy castle. Rancho Park is famous for the immense range of animals that it has.There is everything here from an American Bison to a giant tortoise. All manner of snakes are on show from the green anaconda to the Royal Python which can attain a size of 5 feet. Marvel at The Griffin Vulture, which is one of the largest birds of prey on the Iberian Peninsula. The Nile Crocodile must be treated with respect as they can grow up to 5m in length and have very powerful jaws The rarest animal on show is the White Tiger which was nearly hunted to extinction because of its white fur. Ajui on the wild west coast of Fuerteventura is a favourite holiday destination for those staying at Fuerteventura hotels. This sleepy fishing village comes alive in the fishing season of May to October when the local restaurants serve locally caught fish. A local delicacy is Patas de Cabras, which is a type of shellfish, prised from cave walls in August and September only. The main attraction of the village though is Caletta Negro. This cave is over 600 metres deep and consists of a series of connected chambers and passageways. During the 19th. century, lime was shipped in from Puerto de la Pena and to the right of the village, the remains of a lime kiln can still be seen. Notice also, the steps and concrete pillars which are all that remain of a plan to convert the caves into a submarine base during WWll. The beach at Cofete is over 5 km long and is the big attraction of the newly opened Bioshere Reserve, awarded by UNESCO. The cliffs of volcanic rock allow you to get a good view of the SS American Star sunk here in 1994. A short journey from Magalluf and a favourite of those staying at Majorca hotels is the Wild Western Water Park. Based an a wild west theme, this park has a variety of rides including The Beast, which has 4 slides with vertical descents that end with a 30 metre kamikaze drop. Other attractions include a 500, 000 gallon wave pool, which is newly opened. Be amazed at the Sea Lion Show, and gasp at Oliver’s water Show, where acrobats astonish you with their death defying plunges.There are also Jacuzzis, a falconry display and a number of places set aside for sun bathing. Plenty of refreshments are available and there is even Crazy Golf for the children.
