This may sound really dorky, but… I am hopelessly addicted to goal setting and when I am fully engaged in the business of pursuing my dreams and my goals I am as high as a kite. It is just like your best moments being with the love of your life; hanging out with best friends, reading the greatest book or jumping out of an airplane. The pleasure that comes with active, purposeful goal setting is euphoric. It is a rush. Why use cocaine or heroin I when I can get legally high with billions and billions of super-healthy, endorphins and other naturally occurring chemicals bursting inside my brain all day long. The simple fact is endorphins make me feel deliriously, delightfully happy. I can turn on my endorphins at home, at work, at play, in bed, on a plane, in a car, on a bike, even in while writing this article! And it’s all perfectly legal and natural. And best of all, you can learn exactly how to turn the little creatures on whenever you want for whatever reason you want. Now it may be hard for you to believe that goal setting can make you feel that good, however, the simple fact is... goal setting is really that good. Endorphins were unknown until the 1970’s Endorphins were first discovered in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. So many members of the military were coming home profoundly addicted to opium and heroin that the government launched a massive effort to find a cure to this powerful addiction. What scientists found was that opiates interact with specialized receptors that exist primarily in the brain and spinal cord. And when opiates come in contact with these receptors, they hinder or block the brain cell’s transmission of pain signals. Now that seemed curious to the scientists who were now puzzled why these highly specialized receptors existed in the first place. The only answer they concluded was that the opioid receptors existed due to the presence of opiate-like substances produced naturally in the body. Final conclusion: These opiate-like substances were provided courtesy of natural evolution millions of years ago and are extremely crucial to our survival as a species. Think fight or flight! Think mortal combat! Think life threatening wound! Conclusion was a Game Changer. For starters, we now had solid evidence that every human has his or her own personal, friendly, little drug dealer living right in his body. This is especially important since (did I tell you?) endorphins are also responsible for feelings of intense pleasure. For example, do you want to get high? Just go for a run. Want to feel euphoric and warm and fuzzy all over? Go fall in love. The full magnitude of this amazing discovery has yet to sink in for most people. So why should you be foolish and buy illegal drugs that are only going to destroy your health and your body when the very best drug in the world is totally free, healthy and always right at your brain stem and it just needs you to trigger it. Interestingly, you can learn to turn your endorphins on full power at will. You just have to learn to control your state. Then with a little practice you will be able to achieve this optimal state of euphoria whenever the desire moves you. The choice is yours: you can stay in the passenger seat and let your emotions and feelings get driven around by your ungoverned brain-stem or take charge of your state (and your endorphin releases) and start driving instead. At the end of the day, when you combine controlled state change with powerful written-down goals you are on a rocket ship to the stars. And it doesn’t get better than that.
