Bharatbook.com has added the special report , which sources information of this Key Note Market Report Update examines recent changes in the UK airports market. The global economic downturn and its impact on air travel is still being felt in 2010 Despite falling passenger numbers, the revenue generated by airports is estimated to have increased by 29% since 2006, up to £3.77bn. Aviation revenue is forming an increasingly large share of the market owing to a number of factors, including the rising price of crude oil. In an average year, BAA accounts for around 70% of the total turnover in the airports industry; it is for this reason that the Competition Commission has ordered BAA to sell Stansted and one of its Scottish airports (either Glasgow or Edinburgh) to try and even the playing field in the airports market. The Manchester Airport Group has stated an interest in purchasing one or more of these airports — and as such is becoming an increasingly powerful body in the airport industry. Airports experienced a particularly difficult series of events in 2010 — the ash cloud from the erupting Eyjafjallajoekull volcano in Iceland grounded UK flights in spring of 2010. The rest of the year was plagued by threats of industrial action from airport and airline staff, and ended with a bout of severe winter weather that saw snow and ice ground planes across the UK. BAA in particular came under fire for its handling of the problem at Heathrow. Declining passenger numbers can be blamed on these factors alongside those linked to the economic climate. However, BAA is hopeful that — without these issues — passenger traffic through some of its airports would have grown more quickly in 2010 as the economic situation eased. The UK is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, and air travel is by far the most popular method of travelling for inbound and outbound international passengers. In 2010, the number of air passengers in and out of the UK was nine times greater than those who arrived and departed by the next popular method, by sea. Air travel is unlikely to come into direct competition with many other forms of transport in the near future, especially for long international flights. Key Note predicts that revenues at airports will continue to increase until at least 2015. Although passenger numbers in 2010 are at the lowest level since 2004, recovery is predicted, particularly as the middle of the decade is reached.
