Most of the people probably think that there is a huge difference between a red laser pointer and a violet laser for example. However, thinking that they have a totally different mechanism is absolutely wrong. In fact, the only factor which determines the color of a laser’s beam is the length of the light waves evolved. Let’s explain it in some more details. A laser pointer, no matter whether it is a red laser pointer, a green laser pointer etc, is designed to use the power coming from the batteries in order to evolve light waves of a particular length. A red laser pointer, for instance, evolves light waves with length of around 700 nanometers whereas a green laser evolves waves whose length is around 500-550 nanometers. That’s right! The length of waves is the only difference between lasers whose color of beam is different. But there is a common question which so many people are asking themselves. Does it really matter if a red laser pointer or a green laser pointer will be used for a particular purpose? To be frank, in most of the cases it is of no significance but there are some appliances which have been “occupied” entirely by a laser pointer whose beam is of a particular color. Basically, a red laser pointer is used in all those formal events such as delivering presentations, providing lectures, tuitions, lessons etc. That is something like an approved tradition which cannot change that easily. The first few years after the first laser’s appearance on the market, there were only red laser pointers. People got used to using them, which is why it was really difficult for the lasers whose beam was different from red to elbow their way. Excluding the traditions and people’s prejudices, it is really not of a great matter whether a red laser pointer will be preferred, or another type of laser will be used as a replacement. But wait! There are still cases in which using a red laser pointer is highly recommendable. For example, lasers are often used by astronomers for pointing at particular objects (usually, stars) in the sky. Since red is the brightest color, using a red laser pointer would be the easiest way to show a particular sky object to somebody. If a violet laser is used for example, it might be really hard to notice since the sky gets pretty much the same color at nights.
