When you have a clog somewhere in your plumbing system, you may find that it affects one or many of your drains. Upon learning that there is a blockage in the pipes of your home, it is essential that you release the blockage as soon as possible. If you do not completely remedy the situation, you will soon find that it has magnified and expanded to a point that it can no longer be ignored. Sewer snakes are one of the most common and effective tools for drain cleaning. If you have access to sewer snakes and are considering doing the job yourself, it can be helpful to become more informed about the tricks and uses of sewer snakes. The most basic information that a person should know when they are using sewer snakes to clean drains is the size of the snake. Sewer snakes can be as short as ten or twenty-five feet and as long as several hundred feet. Many of the sewer snakes that are available to rent are on the shorter side. These sewer snakes are perfect when the clog is close to the pipe opening or the cleanup. This is one reason that it is essential that you try to clear the clog immediately. If a clog sits for a long time, it may slowly work its way down further into the pipes, becoming lodged in a place where it affects more drains in the house. Short sewer snakes are much easier to manage and to use than long sewer snakes, so it is best to break up the blockage when it is still close to the drain. Sometimes it is not possible to use sewer snakes when a clog is in close proximity to the opening of the drain. Clogs can be caused as rubbish accumulates throughout the pipes or it can be caused because the pipe has been compromised. Sewer snakes are one of the few options for drain cleaning when the main line has become compromised through the entrance of tree roots into the line. Main line sewer snakes or drum drain cleaners are much larger, sturdier, and longer than hand sewer snakes. They often have an electricity powered feeding mechanism so they automatically go down the pipe. If you are using this automatic feeding option, rather than pushing sewer snakes into the drain manually, it is important that you turn it off once you reach the clog. Drain cleaning can be a precarious process and allowing sewer snakes to go down the line uncontrolled can cause them to break or can damage the pipes. When you are using sewer snakes to cut through blockage that is in a pipe, remember to push and pull the auger back and forth so that it cuts slowly and cleanly through the clog. Also, try rotating and repositioning the sewer snake so that it may have a wider range of effectiveness. By carefully and deliberately using sewer snakes, you can effectively remove blockage in your drain pipes and restore full function to the plumbing fixtures in the house.
