Dadasaheb Phalke's Raja Harishchandra, a silent movie made in 1913, heralds the beginning of Bollywood's history, as Mumbai's huge movie industry is usually referred to. It was a major hit and worked as an inspiration for many skilled and creative people to make their own movies. After the silent age came the talkies, and the very first sound film Alam Ara hit the screens in 1931, followed by the first colour film Kisan Kanya. Films that came out of Bollywood during the 1940s were often escapist fares, owing to the social and political upheavals that were brought about by the nationalist movement, which coincided with the Second World War. Achhut Kanya that dealt with the burning issue of untouchability, and Shaheed, that was strongly patriotic in its storyline. Rural poverty and undying family values were finely portrayed in Mehboob Khan's Mother India, which was released in 1957. During the same period, ace director Guru Dutt gave the audience such wonderful films like Pyaasa, and the versatile Raj Kapoor made two outstanding films, namely Awara and Shree 420. Mughal-E-Azam, an epic movie released in 1960, brought the Mughal era on the silver screen like never before. Film actors like Dev Anand, Nargis, Ashok Kumar and Madhubala became heartthrobs of millions, and music composers like OP Nayyar and SD Burman enthralled listeners by their immortal musical compositions. It was during the 50s and 60s that Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar won nationwide acclaim as playback singers. Shammi Kapoor, with his Elvis-like looks, danced his way to stardom in the swinging 60s. The 70s saw the rise of Amitabh Bachchan with his characters fighting against injustice and corruption. Action films ruled the minds of the cine goers during the eighties, but with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), the tastes of the audience changed and romantic movies became popular. This popularity largely continued well into the 90s and is an important factor even in the latest Bollywood movies. But Bollywood today has a highly sophisticated industry, creating movies that often get wide acclaim from throughout the globe. To check out new bollywood releases or to RA One go to DoctorFlix.
