RIM’s BlackBerry began in North America, and was one of the United States’ first smart phones. Recently, RIM has opened satellite companies throughout Western Europe, the Middle East, in various nations in East and Southeast Asia including Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea. Although, the satellite companies are intended service mostly the citizens of the countries listed above, many of these foreign-based companies do offer services in English, specifically for tourists and visiting professionals. Many people are familiar with wide variety of BlackBerry apps, which deals with travel arrangements. Many of these applications can help would-be travelers make reservations, plan itineraries, and receive up-to-date flight updates. However, other applications that are available for download can translate several foreign languages into English from written signs, or verbal communication, as well as printed material. At the same time, many phones and tablets come equipped with global positioning systems that are a great help to travelers who find themselves in an unfamiliar place. Although, they may not be able to ask foreign citizens for directions, their phones and tablets is a software, which can provide them with written and auditory directions in their own language, thus making navigation quite easy. Because of these functions many people take their mobile phones with them, when traveling abroad. Accidents happen, and machines break. We all found ourselves in this situation. However, in our native countries, our phones are technological conveniences that we can survive without for a great period of time, because of the fact that everyone in our country speaks the same language, and can be easily understood. I shudder to think of what it would be like if my phone was my only lifeline to directions and translation in a foreign land. What would happen if I dropped my phone, and it was so broken that it was irreparable? Although this would be a minor inconvenience to me at home, this should be disastrous in a foreign country. I would be left without any way to communicate or navigate my way or the busy streets to restaurants, hotels, and more important services such as hospitals and police. Luckily, as has been previously explained, RIM has expanded its operation into several foreign countries. Therefore, this company has begun to develop national BlackBerry apps that allow international BlackBerry subscribers access to BlackBerry support. These national apps designed to allow both foreign subscribers and visiting people access to important information such as bus, taxi, and train schedules as well as price-lists. Based on this information, it is clear that as the satellite companies continue to develop, further applications will be made available, which will help foreign travelers in many countries avoid financial, technological, and potentially fatal disasters will traveling abroad.
