Zocor is primarily used for the treatment of high cholesterol and high triglycerides, including the prevention of heart or blood vessel disease. The drug works by helping lower total cholesterol, "bad cholesterol," and triglycerides in individuals who cannot achieve this despite having modifications in their lifestyle. Additionally, Zocor is used in decreasing the chances of heart disease in people suffering from coronary heart disease, diabetes, or peripheral vascular disease. However, muscle pain and aches are found to be a common problem among individuals under Zocor medication. This is most observable during the starting phases of treatment or during the increase of dosage. Unfortunately, it is quite impossible for healthcare providers to know whether a patient will develop these problems if one has never been in Zocor therapy. Thus, is pertinent to let healthcare providers know if muscle pains occur during treatment. A physician may recommend adjusting the dosage of Zocor or an alternative switch cholesterol medication. However, a more serious illness may be suspect when one experiences muscle aches, weakness, pain, or tenderness that come with a fever or feeling of sickness. This is because Zocor, a trade name for simvastatin, bears a possible adverse effect on the liver which include an increase in liver enzymes, Hepatitis (characterized by an inflammation of the liver that results tiredness or a general feeling of illness), Jaundice or a yellowing of the skin or eyes that (being symptomatic of a damaged the liver), a fatty change in the liver, cirrhosis, and a type of liver cancer known as hepatoma. Just as with any other statins, Zocor is reputed to increase the levels of liver enzyme. This increase in liver enzymes does not come with any symptoms except in very rare cases. However, doctors will measure liver enzyme levels prior to treatment with Zocor and several months after a patient started taking the drug. If done according to FDA warnings, injuries can be avoided and a Zocor lawsuit may be kept at bay.
