The beautiful hill station of Munnar is a picturesque tourist spot famous for its tea plantations and rare species of plants and wildlife. It was a summer resort for the British government in South India and is located in the Idduki district in Kerala. Some of the main draws to Munnar are the National parks and Sanctuaries that are home to some endangered animal and plant species such as the Nilgiri Tahr which is a mountain goat found only in this region, the Nilgiri Wood Pigeon and the Neelakurinji, a rare blue flower that blossoms only once in twelve years and covers the hill slopes, making the hills appear blue. Tourist spots in an around Munnar include Mattupetty, famous for its lake and dam which are touris favorites because of the wonderful view of the surrounding tea plantations and hills. Cattle sheds hold a large variety of different cattle and only three out of the eleven sheds at Mattupetty are open to tourists. Places like the Anaimudi peak, the highest peak in Southern India which is located about 13 km from the town of Munnar and Kuthumkal waterfalls are a major attraction for the more adventurous tourists. Ernakulam and Aluva are the closest major railway stations and the nearest airport is located at Cochin, 105 km away.
