Shimla is the Capital of Himachal Pradesh, a State in North India. It was called the Summer Capital by the British Government and remains a popular tourist destination to this day. Shimla is located on the northwest ranges of the Himalayas which makes it perfect for adventure sports. Shimla is enveloped by pine, oak, rhododendron and deodar forests. The buildings around Shimla are old fashioned with a colonial touch. The temperature may rise and drop suddenly due to the high altitude. Weather conditions are best in summer and this is usually the time of year when it is crowded with travelers. Due to a large number of tourists visiting Shimla, hotel reservations should be made in advance. Locals usually get around on foot or by private vehicles, buses and tourist taxis are also available for longer journeys but one will not find any autorickshaws in Shimla. It is connected to Chandigarh by the National Highway 22 and one can easily travel by bus to any of the major cities. Shimla is also connected with Delhi by flights from the Shimla Airport, located at Jubbarhatti, about 22 km away and with Kalka by a narrow gauge railway line. Kalka has regular departures to the major cities in India. Tourist attractions in Shimla vary from adventure sports like skiing, trekking and ice skating to something relaxing like taking a walk through the mall, Playing Golf at the Naldehra Golf course or visiting the zoo at Kufri. One can reach Lakkar Bazaar by walking further down on the mall road. Lakkar Bazaar has shops selling wooden handicrafts unlike the mall which is famous for its woolen products from Ludhiana and Punjab. Restaurants in Shimla are quite cheap and offer a variety of cuisines. Restaurants for local cuisine, however, are harder to find.
