There are a number of different electronic medical records, or EMR , programs for practices to currently choose from. The systems vary in the capabilities that are offered to better fit the needs of the practice being served. The majority of medical practices including human and veterinary care are now utilizing these practice management software. The regulations behind the use and privacy of these records vary slightly by country. The basic law that the document cannot be altered remains the same. The World Health Organization has not taken a stand on the use of this form of medical documentation. For large facilities with multiple locations these records have made following a patient much easier. The complication of tracking a paper folder and physically moving it from one location to another has been removed, lessening the issue of missing charts. Complications regarding communication between providers are also drastically diminished because the information is all provided in the electronic charting. Another feature which is gaining greater appreciation is the feature involving generated prescriptions. This either allows the prescribing provider to print out a prescription or directly fax it to the pharmacy of choice. In the case of narcotics, or controlled substances, many pharmacies will still require a hand written prescription. The dramatically reduced time spent in writing prescriptions for patients and diminished confusion due to illegible handwriting has impressed all areas of health care. Having medical conditions, treatments, and current prescriptions available have proven to be a safety net in many cases. The implementation of these records has produced a backup plan in the event there is an accident in which the patient is unable to respond to vital health information. This is also a feature which has worked well for patients with extensive medical history or patients with memory issues that cannot remember this sometimes confusing information. The implementation of EMR has made it much easier for providers and patients alike. The programs are varied to offer the greatest benefit to the providers that will be utilizing the system. While there are concerns over privacy and security, a person's health cannot be denied.
