In the current climate, salary increases and bonuses in the UK seem to be a thing of the past, yet the cost of rent, utilities and food seem to be rocketing higher every day. Cost of living marches onwards, taking with it precious disposable income and the small joy of spending a little on something that's not necessarily essential. However, people still enjoy indulging in luxuries from time to time, so they are finding smarter ways to make do and save money. Many have set up shops on eBay and what would once have gone to the charity shop now instead is being sold to the highest bidder, whether it’s worth £250 or £2.50. People are also getting thriftier, where they can see a way to get around spending money, they do. Cinemas have had to deal with customers smuggling in sweets and drinks in their bags to avoid paying the inflated prices and everyone seems to be warming to the 'basics', 'simply' and 'essential' ranges in the supermarkets. Own-brand products are replacing big brands in trolleys and people are counting their saved pennies per item, and that soon adds up. Big energy companies have raised their prices again, but the British public are fighting them. Each time winter comes round they hold out a little longer, the temptation to turn on the heating gnawing away until finally they succumb. But for every day they hold out, for every dress sold on eBay and for every own brand product that replaces its branded counterpart, there are another few pounds for frivolity- life’s little luxuries that make it worth living. There are a plethora of voucher sites that offer amazing discounts on luxurious pastimes that without the voucher may seem particularly frivolous. A spa day in this recession is something most can ill afford. Everyone is after a deal, and in this day and age, if you look hard enough, there is always one to be found. Many companies also offer deals directly and often all it takes is signing up to a newsletter or two. Obviously it’s best not to go mad and sign up to everything and it is also a good idea to set up a separate email account to avoid the annoyance of your regular mailbox being filled up with junk and offers you can’t afford. But when the time comes and you have some spare cash, you can peruse at your leisure. Social media is also a great source of deals, whether it’s by retweeting, liking on Facebook or simply waiting for any special offers to be posted, you can often find last minute deals at unbelievable prices all over the net. So whether it is luxury holidays at bargain prices, 10% off your restaurant bill or a free massage, you deserve your little bit of luxury. Bruce Giles writes for a digital marketing agency.
