Adults get the infamous curse that teenagers and young adults, the sebaceous glands acne occurs in all. What is Sebaceous Gland Acne? The severity ranges from mild to extreme and focuses largely on the face, although other areas of the body are certainly prone to an outbreak. Over-the-counter astringents and lotions to foster a drier skin are commonly used to help keep these outbreaks to a minimum, or at least reduced in their severity. Essentially sebaceous glands acne is the result of a blocked hair follicle or sweat pore. An oily substance called sebum is produced by glands for the purpose of naturally lubricating the skin, and is then transported to the skin's surface. If blocked, the sebum becomes trapped, reacts with bacteria and becomes infected. The activity of the sebaceous gland will determine the amount of sebum produced. What Do You Do when the Gland Becomes Infected? The following infection produces the characteristic whitehead which is the sebum lying under a thin layer of epidermis. The procedure of "popping" a whitehead is all too familiar with many of us at some time of our lives. Sebaceous glands acne also takes other forms than just whiteheads. Blackheads get their pigment from the skin's melatonin; nodules that are hard and domed or steeple-like and quite painful; cysts which are full of pus and very painful; and papules that are small, often whitehead-like in appearance but more solid. What's the Difference Between Sebaceous Gland and Penile Papules? Papules can be quite prevalent on males' private parts. When located under the rim of the penile glans, they are referred to as pearly penile papules (PPP). These papules can also be found on the penile shaft or scrotum. They may appear in a cluster or individually. As this anatomical area has an abundance of sweat glands, this is not a surprising condition. However, males may understandably be alarmed when this form of sebaceous glands acne on the penile glans remains for a lengthy period. It can be mistaken for a serious condition or a STD but it is not harmful, nor contagious. Like most sebaceous glands acne types, this form can also disappear in time. But as this part of the anatomy is important to a male's sexual well- being, any amount of time may seem too long before inflicting one's self-esteem. Treatments For Pearly Penile Papules If time is a factor, there are methods to eradicate PPP, from the at-home treatments to clinical procedures.
