The side effects from ADHD meds are well known and are very worrying because there is very little information available on the long term effects on the young child's brain. We are talking in many cases of children as young as four years old. It is estimated that about 30% of children experience some problems with the side effects and have to change their medication and dosages or just choose an alternative therapy. The first thing to note is that the basic component of most of these meds is similar to an amphetamine so the comparison with cocaine is not inaccurate . These drugs act on the brain transmitters and also will increase the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine. In the short term, that is great as there is a reduction of inattention and hyperactivity. In the long term though, there is a negative effect on the structure of the brain. All these symptoms are very similar to those adults who are on cocaine! Some of these drugs are psychotic drugs and in a few cases, children may experience hallucinations. Clonidine is a high blood pressure drug but the risks of using this in conjunction with a stimulant such as Ritalin should not be ignored. There have been cases of sudden death due to heart attacks but the numbers are tiny and some estimates put these at between 1 in 1,000. But who wants to take this risk? Some side effects from ADHD meds are alarming in that the child's growth may be negatively affected. The reason is that the growth hormones which are produced by the pituitary gland are put out of sync. That means stunted growth in some kids, not helped by a loss of appetite as well. Some of the newer drugs which are non stimulants have a less disastrous effect on the appetite but it is still a risk we have to consider. As if that was not enough some other side effects from ADHD meds include insomnia, hallucinations, depression and irritability. These symptoms are often then treated with anti depressants and it seems that the child will never be able to get off the drug treadmill at all. In the long term, apart from the damage done, the effects also begin to wear off so a much more comprehensive approach in the treatment of ADHD is called for. So, what is the safer and much more effective option? The answer lies in using homeopathic remedies for ADHD because they are based on a totally different concept which is restoring the delicate body mind balance in the child. There are no side effects at all and there are no health risks either. Doctors and teachers are often ignorant about how effective these remedies can be. The secret though is that if they are used with diet, green time and exercise and an ADHD friendly home, they become even more effective. Why take the risk and have to worry about the side effects of ADHD meds? Why should you and your child have to put up with the side effects from ADHD meds?
