In days gone by, it was commonly accepted that writers could not expect to earn a great deal of money from their career. Few exceptions, such as Stephen King and Mary Higgins Clark, broke through this norm by gaining large and sweeping popularity and profits. However, most authors and poets lived on meager budgets and wrote only for the joys of personal expression. The internet has changed all of this, opening up a new frontier before writers in which any writer that is creative enough can make a great deal of money. Self-Publishing Many of the major book publishers have ceased reading manuscripts from unpublished authors. The world of words is highly competitive and publishers in modern times are only interested in reading manuscripts that they know will sell. This has put a great damper on the creative progress of literature, as highly talented young authors remain in obscurity. The internet, however, has now created a forum wherein authors can publish their work online, without the aid of large book publishing companies. The beauty of self-publishing lies in the fact that it is both cost efficient and effective for wide distribution. Millions of people browse the internet every day and writers can therefore potentially have their work viewed by countless browsers on a daily basis. In addition, books can also be sold online, in a downloadable form. This means that a web browser interested in your work can pay you a set fee and download your book directly onto their computer, where they can read it at their leisure and own it forever. All of the profits from online self-publishing goes directly to the author, less whatever hosting fees may be associated with using an online publishing service. Audio Books Books are no longer only available in the form of bound pages. Many books are now being sold in the form of audio files. This means that you can "read" an entire book, just as you would listen to a music track. Publishing companies hire vocalists to read and record entire books onto audio tracks, which are then available for purchase online in the form of a download. Men and women can now purchase audio books and listen to their favorite author tell them a creative story during their daily commute or while taking a road trip with the family. This has revived the popularity of literature and has boosted author's salaries because their work is being sold in a way that expands their demographic and reaches certain markets that written materials never could. Online Vendors Many of the largest book retails are now selling books online. This is a major step forward for the publishing industry, as men and women can now purchase virtually any title, whether or not it is in stock at their local bookstore.
