It has been brought out by many studies conducted in the aviation sector in the past that there is direct correlation between the customer satisfaction, performance of the airlines and its productivity. The studies have pointed out that the customer satisfaction is a predominant factor in the making or marring of the airlines fortunes. And, to keep the customer satisfaction high, one of the most important factors, besides the differentiated grades of services, is the extent of punctuality in the operation of flights.
The airlines which have a better punctuality rate are more credible for the customers and the same are also likely to be more operationally efficient than the others. For this reason that they are able to make good savings by preventing the delays in flight operations, these airlines stand a better chance of offering cheap air tickets to the customers.
You would be surprised to know that the reasons which contribute to the delay in flights accounts for loss of billions of dollars annually which have to be factored in the cost of the tickets. What are these contributing factors which lead to such delays? The three primary factors which lead to the delays of flights are the technical delays (faults in machinery of airplane, etc), the delays due to ground handling (loss of baggage, etc) and due to the flight operation (weather) related factors. The delay causing reasons can also be clubbed in different categories of airline related, security related, weather related and even the other airport related reasons. Further, there are losses due to the airline passengers missing their connecting flights and there are tens of thousands of these people which miss their flights. Further, the loss of baggage accounts for addition to costs of the airline operations. These problems are spread over the entire spectrum of the airline operations whether it is the cheap international flights or the domestic flights.
It is estimated that there is considerable scope of improvement of the ground handling operations and in the procedures of the airline operations to reduce the instances of delays due to those factors which are under the control of the humans. Controlling these delay causing factors will improve the punctuality of the airlines and in improving the customer satisfaction. The savings from these improvements can thus be passed on to the customers in the form of cheap air tickets or improved facilities. Since there are billions of dollars which can be saved, this is quite a significant sum which can make a difference to the profitability and growth of the airlines.
