Wood or timber flooring is basically anything made from wood to be used as flooring. It is very common because of its elasticity and flexibility. Timber flooring has a great look that is very difficult to imitate in any other type of flooring. It also serves as a style statement as it is considered as a superior to other types of flooring. Hardwood flooring have three basic types: 1. Solid wood flooring: Solid wood flooring is completely made of wood. Wood for solid wood flooring can be bought finished (finished in the factory, only needs installation) or completely unfinished (has to be finished before installation). This type of flooring can be refinished several times. This type of timber flooring has its own three sub types Strip flooring: This type of floor is made by strips of wood, it maybe 1 strip, 2 strip or 3 strip type. Strip flooring has a certain fixed width of the strips, but the thickness varies. These are named by the width of the strip, as 3 strip is the widest of the three. 3 strip normally makes a elegant looking floor as compared to 1 strip and 2 strip flooring. Plank flooring: This type of solid wood floor is made by joining planks of solid wood, the planks can of a width of choice (normally varying between 3 to 8 inches) and the thickness can be either 1/2 or 3/4 of an inch. Plank flooring is normally done with planks of a strong wood, so that it won't break easily. Parquet flooring: This is a completely different type of hardwood flooring in terms of appearance. It is normally made by joining different blocks or slats of wood into geometric patterns like herringbone, chevron, basket weave, etc. The width of the blocks of wood can be varied to fit the type of design, but the height is normally 1/2 or 3/4 of an inch. 2. Engineered Wood Flooring: Engineered wood flooring is manufactured by many thin layers of plywood with a top layer of solid wood. This flooring is not laminate flooring, as laminate flooring does not contain the smallest part of solid hardwood. This type of flooring can only be refinished once or twice. Engineered wood flooring also comes in strip flooring, plank flooring and parquet flooring. 3. Acrylic-impregnated Wood Flooring: Acrylic impregnated wood flooring is mostly used commercially. This type of flooring is made by infusing or impregnating the solid wood with sealant and color, making the finish consistent throughout the wood. Acrylic impregnated wood flooring is very durable, hence used in commercial areas such as office buildings, etc. It provides a wide range of colors and styles to choose from. Buffing regularly keeps it polished. The disadvantage of it while comparing with other types of floor is that it cannot be refinished.
