How To Ensure Clear Thinking When Changing Jobs

Career

For many people, changing jobs can be a highly emotional time – there is the stress of finding another position and making ends meet until you do; the excitement of leaving what was probably a horrible workplace; and even the apprehension of what lies ahead. With all of these emotions swirling within you, it can be very difficult to think clearly. Use these steps to ensure that your transition to a new job is done with clear thinking:

  • Dispel Mental Clutter
Make a list of all the things in your life that remain outstanding (and, therefore, are taking up room in your head). Then, systematically work your way through this list, tackling the small items first, until you have worked through all of your mental clutter.
  • Thinking Time
You need to give yourself some headspace to reflect on your life and where it is going, even it is only 10 or 15 minutes a day. Changing jobs is a big decision and it is important that you take the appropriate time to sit down and work through it all.
  • Sort Your Life
Focus on the present tense and ask your questions about things you are currently experiencing (to keep the answers relevant). Other than changing jobs, what else do you need to concentrate on? School? The kids? An illness or injury?
  • Prepare For Change
For many people, the thought of changing anything makes them nervous and the thought of changing jobs downright terrifies them. If this is you, start small – read a different magazine to normal, dye your hair, and so on. This will mentally prepare you for bigger, more permanent changes.
  • Imagine A “New You”
Fortunately, if you are specific about what you want when it comes to changing jobs and what you want to achieve it decision making can be that much easier. Try visualizing yourself in your new job and see how you like the fit.
  • Make The Change
When changing jobs, it is important that you pick the right moment to act, otherwise you may end up jobless for months on end or blurting out something inappropriate in front of a potential employer. Take baby steps, decide what you would like to say, be honest and do not panic.

If you take the above steps into consideration when deciding that changing jobs is your only remaining option, you will ensure that you have a clear head when it comes time to act. Focus on the most important matters, make the changes that you so desperately want and good luck with your new job.
