A single parent with children of all ages has to practically be a sergeant major to successfully manage his household. If your wife has left you and left the children also and you are faced with three bewildered kids, unmade beds, dishes in the sink, laundry on the floor, below are some tips for managing your household as a single parent. 5 practical tips on managing your household Your children are young, under five, and cannot be expected to do major chores in the home such as vacuuming and washing windows and making supper for four people every night. Consult an agency and employ a housekeeper who can do the chores and also look after the children in the home if she is qualified. Get references from the housekeeper and call the people she had previously worked for. Find out if she is accredited and works well with children. Your children are precious to you and you have to know they are in good hands while you are at work. With no mother in the house, and the housekeeper gone home, there are odd little things to do around the house, and also supper to be cooked and the children fed. Give each child a light chore, just to feel responsible, even if it is only something as simple as picking up the toys and packing them away. Children like order and they like to help and be part of the action. Make their school sandwiches at night for the following day so there's no rush in the kitchen the following morning. Buy their snacks in bulk and put it with their sandwich and fruit they are taking with them to school. A great way to motivate a child to help is to give him a dollar if he has successfully completed a big job like washing the tires of the car or cleaned up the rubble in the yard. Tell him that you are not paying him for what he did, but that you are rewarding him for making your life easier. Tell him if he wants to buy that computer game he is always talking about that you will give him another dollar for clearing away the junk in the garage. Sort the laundry yourself between the dark and white clothing and put it in the washing machine as soon as you come home from work; you don't want the children to do this. When the laundry is done, let the children fold it for the housekeeper to iron. Make a list of the chores of each child and post it on the fridge, together with a separate list of extra-curricular school activities which you as the parent have to attend with the kids. This will make sure you don't forget. Parents can work very effectively with children if they have a plan, stick to the rules, and work together as a team. There are many fathers who are single parents and they do an excellent job raising the kids.
