Guide in Rugs

Advertising
Rugs are available in various sizes as you already should know. There are small mats, as well as those 17 feet wide. On the other hand, wall carpets can reach sizes of 26x37 feet. Preset sizes are for general customers, but those with specific size requirements should opt for custom mats and carpets.

The rug measurement is important. The right size should depend on the dimensions of your floor. No one wants a rug that looks too small in a spacious room.

Consider the Kind That You Want

For an area rug, the measurement is even more important, considering that it lies underneath a furniture piece. The size of an area rug should be big enough such that only its edges can be seen. The entire thing should not be seen lying underneath a piece of furniture.

Another type is the runner rug, which is long, as it is used on staircases and in hallways. Furniture should not be seen near a runner rug, and at the same time, it should not touch the walls. Creating a space between the wall and the rug gives a pleasant look. Depending on the width of the hallway or staircase, make sure to leave about 2 or 3 feet of border. Keep in mind that this kind is usually placed in areas where people regularly pass, so, the high foot traffic means it will easily get soiled. Carpets in areas with high foot traffic should be maintained well. Consider buying durable carpets and mats. Invest in carpet cleaning equipment, too.

Then, you have the so-called accent rug, which is smaller than the area type. There are only a few places in the house where this kind is appropriate. Examples are in front of the fireplace or kitchen sink. It can also be used as a door mat.

Elements to Consider

The shape of the rug is very important when you want a nice interior. Available shapes are round, square, rectangular, and oval. Consider the shape of the furniture and where it is located in the room. Square mats are good to place underneath side tables. Round ones, on the other hand, are good for centerpiece furniture or round dining tables. Oval mats may be laid underneath oval tables. Again, match the size of the rug with the size of the furniture, as it may look inappropriate if it’s too big or too small for the furniture, regardless of its shape.

All the other elements come into play. Color, design, and patterns are the elements that make or break the interior ambiance. Many consumers buy plain rugs direct from sellers to avoid the trouble of having to consider what design to pick out. However, being a little bolder with colors can make a difference in your interior design.

The Material

Of course, carpets, rugs, and mats are made of different materials like cotton, wool, acrylic, or synthetic. A polypropylene or synthetic fiber carpet is good in high traffic areas because of its antistatic and dust-resistant properties. While a wool rug, on the other hand, is appreciated for its long life. Wool lasts longer than propylene, but it absorbs liquid. Cleaning a wool rug is not that difficult, though. Cotton carpets quickly get soiled and should only be used in areas with low foot traffic.
