If you’ve been experiencing back pain, aches, migraine headaches and other physical ailments that are affecting your health and well-being, it may be time to see a chiropractor. Doctor work to restore spinal alignment; a misaligned spine may be triggering the pain reactions you are experiencing, and the chiropractor can work on different areas of the back and muscle groups to improve the condition. While the adjustment process itself isn’t very painful, many people experience some effects for hours and days after the treatment. Here’s what you can expect after your first chiropractic adjustment: Common Effects after a Chiropractic Adjustment There are dozens of different types of chiropractic adjustments that can be performed, and the chiropractor may not even touch the area that is causing pain. This is because chiropractors work primarily on the spinal column, and will manipulate and massage only the areas that are connected to the problem area. The adjustment is often responsible for triggering the following responses and effects: • Muscle aches • Soreness • Muscle tenderness • Slight swelling • Redness You should not see any visible bruises, or significant swelling that lasts for more than 24 hours after the treatment. Adjustments that have not been performed properly may result in excessive swelling of the tissues, soreness and tenderness. If you do experience any of these problems in the post-treatment phases, you should make an appointment to see the chiropractor immediately for an evaluation. Self-Care Plan after a Chiropractic Adjustment There are several ways you can speed up the healing process after a chiropractic treatment; self-care plans will help to restore your body to good health, and help you experience the results of the treatment more quickly. Some of the best things you can do to promote healing after an adjustment include: • Using an ice pack on the treated area (if you are experiencing swelling or redness) • Undertaking light stretching exercises • Sleeping on a suitable mattress • Avoiding heavy lifting • Refraining from intensive physical exercise for at least 3-5 days post-treatment • Eating a balanced diet • Drinking plenty of water Paying attention to your physical routine and diet during the days after an adjustment can make a difference to the outcome of your treatment, and help you recover faster. If you can plan for light activities in the days after the treatment, you can help your body become stronger as it heals. Your doctor will be able to walk you through a self-care plan after treatment, and it’s in your best interest to ask as many questions about your particular adjustments during the consultation. You should not need to take any painkillers or medication during the healing process; check with your chiropractor to determine what will be the best self-care plan for you. Chiropractic treatments can be a valuable alternative to surgery for people suffering from back pain, headaches, arthritis and countless other physical problems; be prepared for your treatment by understanding all of the potential effects, so you can heal and recover as comfortable as possible.
