Chlorine vs. Non-chlorine Sanitizers

Home Improvement,Home Business,Construction
If you own a hot tub, you are probably in it a lot. Soaking in a hot tub is a great way to relax after a long day at work. Sitting in a hot tub for an hour or so can help you clear your mind and reduce your stress levels. It is also likely that your friends and family members come over a lot during weekends to relax in your hot tub and drink cocktails. It is certainly no secret that a hot tub provides both health and social benefits.

Owning a spa, however, requires a lot of maintenance to keep it clean and free from bacteria. If it is not cleaned regularly, you and your guests are put at risk of getting infections from the dirt and bacteria in the water. It is important to use sanitizers in your hot tub a few times a week. You can use chlorine or non-chlorine sanitizers to clean your hot tub. All the sanitizers come with advantages and disadvantages.

Chlorine

Chlorine is normally used for pools, but it can also be used for hot tubs. Chlorine, however, is used in a different concentration in hot tubs. Chlorine granules and tablets are made specifically to clean hot tubs. Chlorine sanitizers are readily available but are not very convenient to use. Chlorine sanitizers have a very strong smell and can irritate sensitive skin.

Biguanide

Buguanide sanitizers are non-chlorine sanitizers that kill the bacteria in the water by attacking the cell wall. These sanitizers are made with hydrogen peroxide-based oxidizers that burn off the organic matter in the water. Biguanide sanitizers have fewer odors than chlorine and bromine sanitizers.

Bromine

Bromine sanitizers are added to a hot tub in the form of tablets, granules or nuggets. Bromine is normally distributed through a cartridge system and has a milder odor than chlorine. These sanitizers are very inexpensive and easy to use. Bromine sanitizers, however, can dry out your skin and requires frequent testing and adjustments.

Ozone

Ozone sanitizers have become increasingly popular over the last few years because they are free from chemicals and do not have strong odors. Ozone is a form of oxygen and is a natural and effective way to clean your hot tub. This sanitizer reduces the need for chlorine or bromine and is easily connected to most spas.

Before you add any sanitizer to your hot tub water, you must test the water level by placing a water test strip in the water. These strips are made to test levels of bromine, chlorine and pH in the water.

Because no amount of sanitizers can protect you from water that is very old and dirty, it is important to drain your hot tub every three or four months. It might not be the easiest or most fun task, but it needs to be done to keep your water clean and free from bacteria. Draining your hot tub should only take you 30 to 45 minutes.
