Buying a custom made dress shirt can be an expensive undertaking sometimes, and when you add in the cost of visiting a tailor for measurements, it quickly becomes too much for most people. In effect, you will be buying a shirt that they have already manufactured, which will then be altered to your size making it as close to a custom made shirt as possible without breaking the bank entirely. To save yourself a little more cost, you could try to measure yourself for a dress shirt, though this is quite a complicated task if you try it on your own. A good tip is to take a shirt that fits you well, and then by using that, you can get some good measurements. The best place to start is by opening the collar of the shirt that you have chosen so you can take a measurement there. Lay the collar flat, but do not measure it from end to end; rather measure it from the button across to the start of the button hole. The measurement that you will have to take is from just under the collar on the back of your dress shirt, right the way down to the end of the cuff. Be sure to pull the sleeve nice and straight but not overly tight. From here you should measure the back of the shirt form shoulder to shoulder. Be sure that the shirt is nice and flat when you take this measurement so that you do not accidentally make it too small. Once done, you should turn the shirt over so that the front is facing you. There are now three measurements that you can make quite easily, across the chest at the bottom of the armpit, across the waist at its slimmest point, and right down the length of the shirt along the line of buttons. The last thing you will need to measure is the inside of the shirt cuff. Do this the same way as you did the collar, from the button to the button hole. With these measurements, you should be able to buy a made to fit dress shirt from almost any retailer that you like, but be sure not to add any figures to account for wrinkles; most businesses will do that anyway.
