Bhagat Singh – Early Life

Bhagat Singh was born on 28 September 1907 in Banga village Jaranwala Tehsil, Punjab, British India. Bhagat Singh was born in a Sikh Jat family that has been already involved in fighting against the Britishers for independence. The house were where he was born now belongs to Pakistan in Punjab province.

<>Unlike many of the Sikhs of his age, Bhagat finally decided not to concentrate on any government school including the Khalsa high school in Lahore, since his grandfather did not allowed him to go in any British authority officials. As an alternative his grandfather, Arjun singh joined Bhagat singh in the Dayanand Vedic high school, as we was follower of Swami Dayananda Saraswati, an Arya Samaj that strongly influence him. Bhagat was much influenced by such events during his early days, giving him profound knowledge of nationalism and patriotism that ultimately makes him to struggle against Britisher for Indian independence.

The First Step against Britishers

In response to the Mahatma Gandhi call for non-cooperation against British rule in 1921, Bhagat Singh formerly left his education and united with National College opened at Lahore, Pakistan. The college was a centre for revolutionary activities he started to get in touch with the main revolutionaries of that time such as Sukhdev, Charan and others. He became the main leader at Hindustan Republican Association formed by the revolutionaries of Uttar Pradesh and eventually changed the name of the organization to Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) in early 1928.

Later on Activities

To stay away from marriage, Bhagat Singh sprint away from his house and went to Kanpur. There he came into contact with Ganesh Vidyarthi and learn many lessons for freedom. On hearing that his grandson has ran-away, his grandmother was seriously ill, he finally returned home. But he continued his activities from his community village.

Lala Lajpat Rai’s Death

The British created a commission for the present political position in India in 1928. The Indian prohibited the Commission because it does not include any Indian in its membership, seeing this Lala Lajpat Rai led a non-violent protest against commission in a silent march, but the police-force responded with violence. The main-in charge of police, James A. Scott ordered the police to do lathi-charge on the protesters and personally beaten Lajpat Rai, who was critically injured in his head. After surviving long Lala Lajpat Rai died on 17 November 1928.

Bhagat Singh Death

Seeking the revenge for Lala Lajpat Rai’s death, Bhagat Singh decided to kill the British officer John Saunders, together with his friend Batukeshwar Dutt. On 8th April 1929, Bhagat and his friend take a fearless step to throw two bombs in Central Legislative Assembly; the smoke was totally filled in the legislative due to the two-bombs whilst shouting the slogan of Inqalab-Zindabad. Subsequently they were arrested and charged with the attempt to murder; while this period they gained much concentration due to a long-lasting 116 days fast. Throughout this period enough evidence for attempt to murder was fetched against it, finally they proved to be criminal and were handed for this activity. In spite of great pressure and numerous appeals by the political leaders, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru were hanged in the early hours of 23rd March 1931, aged 23.

Other matter is that Gandhiji had an opportunity to stop the Bhagat Singh death sentence, but he avoids doing so. Gandhi's followers quarreled that Gandhi may not have enough power to stop the execution, but argues that he did his best to keep Bhagat Singh's alive.

Saunders family

On 28th October 2005, K. S. Kooner and G. S. Sindhra mentioned in a book that Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru were intentionally hanged in such a manner so as to leave them in an unconscious state, so that all of them could be taken outside and shot dead by the Saunders family, under an operation codenamed “Trojan Horse”.

Last Words by Bhagat Singh

The aim of life is no more to control the mind, but to develop it harmoniously; is not to achieve any salvation here after, but to make the best use of it here below; and not to realize truth, beauty and good only in contemplation, but also in the actual experience of daily life; social progress depends not upon the ennoblement of the few but on the enrichment of democracy; universal brotherhood can be achieved only when there is an equality of opportunity, opportunity for social, political and individual life — Bhagat Singh's jail diar
