The empowerment center will conduct its 11 th annual one-day motivational Women Empowerment conference toprovide women with information about starting college and creatingor enhancing careers. The free conference is 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 17 in the auditorium ofMcAllister Fine Arts Center at San Pedro Avenue and CourtlandPlace. The deadline to apply for a scholarship ranging from $500 to $1,000is May 1. The deadline for conference registration is May 10. The conference will have workshops covering 11 areas, budgeting andcredit, enrolling in college, leadership and personal empowerment,nontraditional students, career advancement, effective job searchstrategies, knowing your rights in the workplace, goal setting,interviewing for success, health and wellness (bilingual session)and a Spanish workshop for leadership and personal development. All workshops are 10 a.m. 11:15 a.m.; participants must select oneworkshop to attend. Former students will share their experiences of overcoming previouslifestyles before they decided to pursue an education or career,continuing education specialist Abby Gonzalez said. Scholarship applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, havecompleted fewer than 30 hours by January 2012, submit a scholarshipessay, enroll in six or more hours for fall 2012, complete a FASFAand register to attend the conference. The scholarship committee, consisting of staff members of thecenter, will choose up to 12 recipients to receive a scholarship. Donations for the scholarship are collected from the Women s Clubof San Antonio, formed in 1898 and one of the oldest women s clubsin the state of Texas, other women s organizations that assist thecenter with events year-round, and other private donors, Gonzalezsaid. The director of the women s center, Dr. Helen Vera, will awardscholarships at the conference. A Go Mobile, a large bus, in the parking lot north of McAllisterwill be equipped with 22 computers inside for those attending tofill out an Apply Texas application and complete a FAFSA. This is the only outreach event for women in our community, Gonzalez said, It s vital to our community.
