Speaking with executives at Mercedes-Benz USA, which has recently taken over control of Smart USA from original importer Penske, Motor Trend learned that the micro-car brand is far from finished in the U.S. With the full backing of the German mothership, Smart is planning to reinvent itself in America and return to profitability. But while there's a plan in place, it's a long road ahead. Chevrolet has confirmed the 2013 Cruze will be available with a turbodiesel four. We're betting on the new 2.0-liter common rail diesel sold in the Holden Cruze since GM in Australia has taken the lead on Cruze development. The Holden Cruze with 2.0-liter turbodiesel and manual is rated 5.6 liters per 100 km in Australia, which translates to roughly 42 mpg combined city and highway, equivalent of the U.S. Cruze Eco manual's highway number with the 1.4-liter turbo gas four. General Motors' goal with the diesel Cruze is a 50-plus-mpg EPA highway number, so tuning, tires, and other equipment may be changed for the 2.0-liter turbodiesel version here. Best rating for the gas Cruze is 28/42 mpg, 33 combined, for the Eco with six-speed manual. That magic 42-mpg number has paid off for Chevy so far. Of the buyers who chose the Cruze Eco in the first half of the year, 48 percent selected the six-speed manual transmission, a very high rate for a modern sedan. Chevrolet says 15 percent of buyers of the base LS with the 1.8-liter engine, the only trim level beside Eco available with a stick, opted for three pedals. Overall, 8 percent of 2011 Chevy Cruze buyers have bought a manual so far, just edging out the new Hyundai Elantra's 7-percent manual take rate. Honda expects that 10 percent of Civic DX and LX sedan and DX, LX, and EX coupe customers will take the manual. That doesn't include the Civic Hybrid, which comes only with a CVT; the HF and EX sedan, which comes only with a five-speed automatic; or the Si, which comes only with the six-speed manual. The Civic traditionally has had one of the highest manual transmission take rates in this segment. Initial manual take rate on the Chevy Cruze Eco was undoubtedly skewed by GM front-loading manual gearbox production. Still, the statistic shows that gas prices affect consumer demand to the point that a significant share of buyers will go out of their way to get higher mpgs. The Eco accounted for 17 percent of the 24,896 Cruzes sold in June, which means more than 2000 were Eco manuals. Cruze was Chevy's best-selling car for the first half of the year, reaching 122,972 and outselling the Malibu by a couple hundred units. Chevy says 47 percent of the vehicles it sold in the first half of '11 were cars, the highest share versus trucks or crossover/utility vehicles since 1991. There are still rumors of a Cruze coupe, also in model year '13, while the hatchback just launching in Europe won't be sold in North America until the second-generation model, due no earlier than the '15 model year. The '13 Malibu launches early next year, first with the Eco model. It looks like Chevrolet could make Eco a full line of cars, just like SS Super Sports in the '60s. Don't be surprised to see the Cruze diesel branded as the Eco-D.
