Menorca Villa Holidays for a Unique Leisure Experience

The island of Menorca offers a unique opportunity to see Balearic life as it existed before the advent of mass tourism.  On Menorca, villa based holidays offer you the flexibility and freedom of choice necessary to ensure of that you get the most out of this fascinating island.

Why This Island?

The Balearic group of Islands sits in the Mediterranean off the coast of Spain, and their geography means that they benefit from crystal clear waters and beautiful weather. Yet those conventional attractions are only one relatively tiny aspect of what makes Menorca special. For a number of reasons that need not concern us here, this island has always adopted a policy of only allowing ‘in context’ tourism development. What that means is that things such as environmental and cultural protection have always featured highly as island priorities.  This means that when touring around, it is still possible to see a Balearic island form of life that reflects the past in ways that are perhaps less easy to find in some other Mediterranean destinations.

On Menorca, villa holidays will enable you to not only see and experience some of this authentic life but also to participate in it through activities, such as shopping for food in local markets etc.

The towns

No mention of Menorca villa holidays would be complete without talking about two of its major urban jewels - its capital of Mahon and its ancient capital of Ciutadella. Mahon is a lovely town to explore. Elements of its architecture and layout show a clear British influence from the years when this island was under British control.  It was the magnificent natural harbour at Mahon that caused the British to move the capital from Ciutadella to somewhere that was more convenient for the needs of the Royal Navy and its powerful fleets of the time. The city has an 18/19th-century feel to it and some great shops and boutiques to explore as you meander through its narrow streets.

By contrast, Ciutadella feels rather more ancient and has a much clearer Moorish and Catalan influence in its layout than Mahon. Once again, sitting in one of its quaint streets having a quiet drink as the sun goes down is a truly therapeutic experience - and an escape from the realities of life.

The resorts

Of course, any Menorca villa based holiday is likely to have sun, sand and sea relatively high up on its list of priorities. One of the joys of this island is that many of the resorts are comparatively undeveloped, and it is still possible to find quiet isolated beaches and coves where you will find crystal clear waters waiting for you. For example, Son Bou has a long and beautiful beach of white sand but accommodation there has been kept back from the beach. Even beach access is only along permitted paths - meaning that the dunes and wild plants are protected from erosion.

Santo Thomas and Cala Mitjana are just two more examples of some of the unspoiled beaches that you will be able to easily reach from your Menorca villa - though remember that car hire may be essential if you are to get the best out of this beautiful island.
