I am at the point where I believe the two words, writing and procrastination are conjoined. They are virtually meant to be next to each other. The words are always present and run alongside the other as writers endeavor to write. Regardless of a writer's ability, the feat of actually writing requires the adherence to a quote by Mary Heaton Vorse, 'The art of writing is the art of applying the seat of the pants to the seat of the chair.' I can't begin to tell you how many people I've heard over many, many years say they have a good story to tell and should write a book. I generally reply, "Well why haven't you?" Invariably their reply is, "I don't know, I just haven't gotten around to it." We are all guilty of some form of procrastination from time to time. We put things off, sometimes for perfectly legitimate reasons but more often than not it is simply a delaying tactic. Someone said, 'If it weren't for the last minute, I wouldn't get anything done.' In my case, when it came to writing, I was what might be labeled a habitual offender. It only took me about fifty years to stop procrastinating and finally, 'get around to it.' The motivating factor for me to finally make the commitment to write the novel that I had been talking about for years was my wife. She put it into perfect perspective when she said to me, "You've been saying you ought to write a book for more years than I can remember. I want you to stop dragging your feet and get on with it. I know you can do it, so do it." Fortunately I wasn't as stubborn as a mule and didn't require a smack on the rear to get me moving. Now you may not have a great life's partner to encourage you the way mine encouraged me but fortunately there are books available to assist in getting you over the hump of procrastination when it comes to writing. One that comes to mind which was written several years ago is, 'Overcoming Procrastination', (Signet) by Albert Ellis. If you are really serious about writing or doing anything, then stop procrastination and put the seat of your pants on the seat of the chair and begin. If you have to think too long about starting your writing or any other project you will in all likelihood never get around to it. So go ahead, get around to it and write. ancient essay
