Whether you are training for Taekwondo, Karate, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, or other martial arts, mastering the proper form and preventing injuries should always be on the top of your list. Training for martial arts can be quite extreme as it can take a lot of toll on both your mind and body. It can really be both physically and mentally demanding which is why it is very important to prepare yourself to avoid unnecessary injuries and of course to improve your form and technique. Let me share to you some tips on how to do so. 1. Stretch, stretch, stretch. Stretching is important. It is definitely a must do before and after every martial arts training session. Stretching helps the muscles recover after intense workouts and it also helps prevent injury. It also reduces muscle soreness after exercise. Here's a tip, hold your stretches for several seconds and stretch for a good five minutes before and after every training session. 2. Eat well. Proper nutrition is the key to any physical activity. It is very important to fuel your body with the essential nutrients that it needs to prevent your energy from depleting too quickly. If you work out with an empty stomach, you will definitely get a much shorter and less effective workout because you are already exhausted. 3. Drink, drink, drink. Martial arts training can make you sweat. A lot. If you don't hydrate yourself properly during your training, you can get dehydrated. Always remember to drink water or electrolyte drinks throughout your workout to make your muscles perform their best. Don't forget to drink plenty of water after working out as well. 4. Sleep well. Getting enough sleep is important for both muscle and body recovery. Staying up late and having erratic sleep cycles can affect your performance and recovery. 5. Avoid caffeine prior to training. Coffee, tea, soda and energy drinks can shoot up your heart rate prematurely and cause a shaky sensation when you start training. Caffeine can also cause irregular heartbeat which can have a negative effect on your overall performance. It is very unhealthy to drink caffeine before working out so just reserve it after. 6. Do supplemental training. During off training days, say you just train for martial arts once a week, you can perform supplemental workouts to improve your form, balance and stamina. Doing plyometics, toning exercises and weight lifting can definitely help.
