Preventing the Spread of Shigella Illness

Health
Shigella is a type of bacteria that can be passed from one person to another and is present in stools of infected people. Shigella illness is contracted through contact with stools of an infected person. Touching the stools and then not washing hands carefully after leads to Shigella infection. The likelihood of the infection is high in toddlers with inadequate toilet training.

Like salmonella illness, Shigella infection can be acquired from contaminated food. Sometimes, it is not possible to determine if food is contaminated. Food may sometimes be contaminated and yet look fresh and smell good. Food items become contaminated when handled by people who do not observe hygiene and sanitation. People who do not wash their hands properly after using the toilet may transfer bacteria from their hands to the things they touch. If these people prepare food, they can transfer the pathogens from their hands to the food. Food becomes contaminated then.

There are other ways in which food can become contaminated with Shigella. Flies can be carriers of the pathogenic microorganisms. Contamination occurs when flies come in contact with infected feces and then fly on food. On the other hand, the bacteria can thrive in sewers. So, vegetables grown over leaking sewage can incorporate Shigella. Swimming pools can also be contaminated with Shigella, especially if the water source is contaminated and is not treated well.

Preventing the illness means preventing its spread. There is no vaccine that will keep you from contracting the infection, but it is easy to get rid of Shigella. Thorough hand washing with soap and clean water is the key to prevent the bacteria from entering your body. Workers in daycare centers should instill hand washing in children. More importantly, children should be taught of the proper way to wash their hands.

Various steps should be taken to prevent the spread of the infection. If your child has Shigella illness, you should take precautions when changing his diapers and bathing him. Diapers should be placed in tied up plastic and discarded in safe bins. Bathe the infected child thoroughly using disinfecting soap and clean water. You should wash yourself thoroughly too. Adults and children infected with Shigella should not come in contact with other people. Furthermore, they should not be involved in food preparation. If you have Shigella infection, you should not cook food or offer food or drinks to other people.

The best way to stop spreading the infection is to keep yourself from getting infected. Traveling can increase your risk of contracting Shigella infection. Before you go to your travel destination, look up the place on Google and see if there are cases of Shigella infection there. When you are already there, buy only distilled water, canned drinks, and bottled beverages. Be careful with fruits and foods served to you. Make sure the food is properly cooked. Avoid eating raw food. Buy fruits only at known stores.

Once you suffer from loose bowel movement and abdominal pain any day during your travel, seek medical attention for proper diagnosis. People who do not learn about the disease have high likelihood of spreading it.
