Writers have to write to get become better writers. That is a simple fact. If you are a piano player, baseball pitcher or an artist, you expect to put in hour upon hour practicing in order to get better. That is just the way things work. Why would writing be any different? It's not. The key to improving as a writer is simply this: write. That said, random writing, like random throwing of a baseball, or random bashing at the keys of a piano won't make you improve quickly. Sure, you will likely figure some things out on your own and improve through the simple act of just doing the thing you are working at, but methodical and structured practice is what really makes the difference. Whether one is trying to develop as a pitcher, piano player or writer, having a seasoned coach or mentor is what makes the journey shorter. Think about it for a moment. Professional musicians and athletes did not get where they are without years of work and training and practice. They may not have all had "formal training", but every one will point to a mentor or peer that helped them along the way. Writing is no different. A good teacher, mentor or peer can help you see your work more objectively and can offer suggestions and shortcuts that get your writing where it needs to be much faster than if you were doing it on your own. You will avoid a lot of missteps and blind-alleys with a good map and a guide. For writers, there are numerous ways to develop. You can take classes in school or at writing conferences. You can read books on craft. You can join critique groups and take courses online. You can even make the commitment to get an MFA or a degree in journalism. There is no one size fits all formula for developing as a writer, but it does take commitment and a plan. Your plan to develop as a writer does not have to be extensive, nor does it have to be expensive. The only requirement is that it works for you and is tailored to what you actually need for your specific writing development and goals. Writing is a very individual endeavor. It has been said - by a small minority - that writing is an art and cannot be taught. That is of course, ridiculous. Even the greatest artist had someone who pointed him or her in the right direction when they were starting out. Yes, some writers will have an easier time with certain aspects of writing... thinking up original story ideas, perhaps... but all can get better with a focus on learning and understanding craft, and through consistent practice. buy writing paper
