Friends and family have been checking in onthe house of New Hartford man Phil Smiley all year. They come not to see his home, but a miniature 1860"scolonial Dutch house he has painstakingly been working on nearlyevery day for the past year. Smiley is building the house for his 10-year old granddaughter EmmaPaul. When she found a rough version of it sitting in the basementand collecting dust last August, she looked up at him and asked ifhe could fix it up. Smiley couldn"t say no, and now is ready to take the finishedhouse to Emma on Saturday, right before she and her family movefrom the D.C.
area to Washington state. "It will be nice for me to have that with me, especiallysince we"re making this huge move," said Allison Paul,Smiley"s daughter. "It"s really, reallyspecial." The house has four bedrooms — one of which Emma insisted wasturned into a bathroom —a kitchen, a living room completewith piano and fireplace, and a dining room. There is also anattic, which can be used for storage and also holds batteries thatpower lights throughout the house.
Smiley started to make the doll house for his then three-year olddaughter, Allison, in the late 1960"s. After he started to put the structure together, Smiley realizedthat with the amount of time he spent at work where he was a pilotjet setting across the country and world, it would take three orfour years to Complete Bathroom Sets the house and Allison would be too old toenjoy it. So Smiley put the house in a corner of the cellar, where it sat fordecades, though Allison still played with it and the doll housefurniture, which Smiley"s mother (Allison"sgrandmother) provided. Now, the house is fully furnished and carefully detailed on aone-inch scale.
Smiley cut pieces of pine into individualclapboards along the side of the house, made composite wood floors,collected pieces of fieldstone for the kitchen floor and filled thecracks with a syringe, found black sandpaper to cut into roofshingles, used scrapbooking paper as wall paper (put up with realwallpaper glue) and even set up electrical wiring for lighting ineach room.
