Street food in Britain used to mean an ice cream van, seaside candy floss or a fairground hot dog stall. Fast forward 30 years and frequent foreign travel has meant we’ve certainly learnt from our European cousins and Asian food markets. More restaurants are opening early offering breakfast to busy commuters and city workers, others are delivering fast food while informal dining late into the night is also popular. High-end restaurants really are very up market but you can also search the internet for pop-up dining venues in clubs, pubs or even people’s homes. Gone are the days when booking a restaurant in Suffolk, Sussex or Somerset was a simple choice between English, Chinese or Indian; today you’ll be offered food from around the planet. Fusion food, which mixes food influences from different cultures, was popular in the nineties and is also enjoying a resurgence. Pub food has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years; frozen lasagna reheated in a microwave simply wouldn’t cut it these days. Many pubs have transformed themselves into gastro pubs and the food is as important as the alcohol.
