Lake Titicaca. This beautiful lake that flows between Peru and neighboring Bolivia is the highest navigable lake in the world. This means that some tiny glacial lakes up in rugged mountain ranges may be physically higher in altitude, but you certainly can't hop on a boat and sail across them. Lake Titicaca, on the other hand, has several inhabited islands where locals maintain their indigenous cultures. Additionally, Lake Titicaca has the remarkable man made floating islands of Uros, which locals actually weave by hand and live upon-and have been doing so for centuries. Peru is one of the most diverse countries in South America. With some of the highest Andean peaks, driest desert coasts, and most remarkable ruins, it comes as no surprise that tourism to this unique country is steadily increasing. In fact, in late October 2011, the Peruvian government announced it expects to welcome 2.6 million foreign tourists in the upcoming year. If this estimate is correct, then Peru's number of international tourists will increase 14.5 percent. Peru doesn't just attract visitors from Europe and North America. Nearly 43 percent of Peru's foreign visitors come from Latin America itself, especially Argentina, Brazil, and Chile. So what is all the hype about? Here are some of Peru's most popular tourist destinations. Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu is the Inca ruin site located on top of a semitropical mountain peak. Surrounded by lush mountains and fairly isolated from the modern world, Machu Picchu is undeniably one of the top wonders of the world. Visitors to this site can do it in a day trip from Cuzco, spend the night at Aguas Calientes (the town at the foot of Machu Picchu) for an early start up to the ruins, or hike to it via the famous Inca Trail. A Machu Picchu tour package is commonly utilized by visitors who like have everything planned ahead for them, as a package typically includes nighttime accommodations, train tickets, bus tickets, entrance tickets, and on-the-ground assistance. Cuzco. Cuzco was the capital of the Inca Empire, and much of their unique culture remains. Today, Cuzco is an intriguing mix between ancient cultures, colonial impressions, and modern life. Although Cuzco is a tourist hub, and the most popular place for visitors to base themselves in Peru, Cuzco manages to maintain its charm. In addition to being the perfect starting point for excursions to Machu Picchu and into the Sacred Valley, Cuzco holds many attractions of its own, including ruins, colonial churches, and narrow cobblestone walkways leftover from when Incas ruled.
