Support your team in this President Obama Jersey Knee soreness might keep Brian Urlacher sidelined for the rest of training camp — or perhaps the entire preseason — but the middle linebacker continued to look at the big picture while assessing his injury status."Sept. 9, I'll be ready to play for sure," Urlacher said, referring to the regular-season opener against the Colts. "That's really all that matters to me. Preseason games, all these practices I'd love to be out there, but I'm not going to put myself in jeopardy of missing the first game."Urlacher addressed the media Sunday, one day after he rejoined his teammates following a five-day absence. He was excused from the team for personal reasons unrelated to his knee. Although he declined to discuss the personal matter, Urlacher did divulge a few added details regarding his ailing left knee."I hate sitting out," he said. "I practiced the first four or five days and felt pretty good, then it got sore and a little swollen, so I'm taking some time off right now." Urlacher has missed the last nine practices, with Nick Roach stepping in at middle linebacker. At one point during Sunday's session, Urlacher's knee was heavily wrapped with ice as he watched drills. He suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament and partially sprained posterior collateral ligament during the season-ending win at Minnesota. Urlacher, who did not have surgery, missed the entire offseason.Sunday, Urlacher was asked whether he had more tests done on the knee as a result of the soreness. He somewhat sidestep the question, although Urlacher has no intentions of undergoing any type of arthroscopic procedure."Our doctors are the best," he said. "I trust what they say (and) our trainers. I just do what I'm told to do." Some have wondered why Urlacher never underwent surgery in the first place. It was unnecessary because of the high risk involved with repairing his second-degree MCL and PCL sprains. Gus Gialamas,an orthopedic surgeon for the SeaView Orthopedic Medical Group in San Clemente, Calif., explained the reasoning."It's true that we don't operate on Grade 2 MCL injuries as these deal well with time and physical therapy," Gialamas said. "PCL injuries are difficult to treat operatively. At best, we can slightly tighten up the PCL. Usually, with good rehab, this injury heals well and should not cause too much difficulty returning to sport at full activity."Urlacher, who is likely to miss Saturday's exhibition against the Redskins, refused to put a timetable on his return to practice. He wore a brace at the beginning of camp and felt fine running around despite never having to wear a brace before in 12 seasons. However he progresses from here until the start of the regular season, Urlacher doesn't expect the knee to be a burden. He was asked if he thought the pain might linger."No," Urlacher said. "Once I'm back out there again, we'll monitor my reps and try to make it where it doesn't blow up again."Coach Lovie Smith expressed confidence in his defensive leader."He's missed time before," Smith said. "He missed a season before and it wasn't much of an adjustment when he came back."He's stayed in the game, mentally. We're getting him walk-through reps, keeping his mind fresh. He should be fine.
