Shimla , known as "Queen of Hills Stations"

Travel & Tourism
The word 'Shimla' was originated from 'Shyamali Devi', a re-incarnation of Goddess Kali. There is a Kali Bari Temple in the city. Shimla, also known as Simla, is dotted with structures from the colonial era such as the Auckland House, Gaiety Theatre, Gorton Castle, Peterhoff House and Viceregal Lodge. Tourists can visit heritage buildings including Town Hall, Christ Church, Gaiety Heritage Cultural Complex and General Post Office.

Located in the northwest Himalayas, Shimla is known as the ‘Queen of Hill Stations’. This tourism paradise is situated in the midst of Himalayan cedars and pines at an altitude of 2205 metres above the sea level. The capital of Himachal Pradesh, spread over an area of 18 sq, km, has dense woodlands, apple orchards and beautiful landscapes.

Indian Institute of Advanced Study, State Museum and Art Gallery exhibit a wide collection of paintings, jewellery, textiles, photographs and artifacts. Among other tourist attractions are Himalayan Nature Park, Chail Wildlife Sanctuary, Chadwick Falls, Dorje Drag Monastery, Bhimakali Temple, Tara Devi Temple, Sankat Mochan Temple and Kali Bari Temple.

Shimla is connected by air, rail and road. Nearest airport is at Jubbarhatti, (25 km from Shimla). Kalka, situated at 96 km from Shimla, is the nearest railhead. The route from Kalka to Shimla on narrow gauge, laid in 1903, is a major tourist attraction. Regular taxi and bus services are available between the Delhi and Shimla. The best time to visit Shimla is during the summer months from April to August.

There is no shortage of hotels in Shimla. The hill station has four five-star hotels, five four-star hotels, 14 three-star hotels and many two-star, one-star and budget hotels. Five-star Shimla hotels include Radisson Hotel, Oberoi Wildflower Hall, Oberoi Cecil and Shilon Resorts. Among the four-star Shimla hotels are Amod, Welcomheritage Woodville Palace, East Bourne Resort and Spa, Hotel Quality Inn Himdew and Hotel Pineview. All these high-end Shimla hotels provide all modern amenities like a/c rooms, room service, in-house restaurant, swimming pool, internet connection, car parking, car rental, cable television, laundry, bar and gym.

Aachman Regency, Barowalia Resort, Camp Mashobra Greens, The Cedar Grand, The Destination Resort, Fair Mount Hotel, Galleu Hill Resort, Heaven Blue Hospice, Honeymoon Inn, Hotel Ashiana Regency and Hotel Bridge View Regency are among the three-star Shimla hotels. Hotel Amar Vilas, Asia The Dawn, Hotel Auckland, Hotel Brightland, Hotel Crystal Palace, Hotel De Park, Hotel Deepjyoti, Hotel Dreamland, Hotel Eve and Hotel Gulmarg Regency belong to the two-star category. These hotels also provide basic facilities like a/c rooms, car parking, bar, room service and in-house restaurant. Shimla has also a number of one-star and budget hotels to cater to the needs of those travellers to Shimla who do not want to spend much on accommodation.
