Shirdi is synonymous with the great Saint Sai Baba. Sai Baba, who was born in 1838, first visited Shirdi when he was sixteen and stayed there till his death in 1918. A temple, spread over an area of 200 sq metres, was constructed in Shirdi in 1922 in Baba’s memory. Shirdi shot into fame as a pilgrim centre only during the 20th century. Shirdi is a popular destination of pilgrims throughout the year and over 25000 pilgrims visit the temple daily. The temple complex in Shirdi includes Khandoba, Gurusthan, Samadhi Mandir, Dwarkamai, Chavadi and Lendi Baug. Maruti Temple and Shani Temple, constructed under the supervision of Shirdi Sai Baba, are the other places of attraction in Shirdi.Delhi is situated around 1300 km from Shirdi. Delhi has many monuments which are frequented by the travellers. Monuments like Red Fort, Qutab Minar, Purana Qila and Jama Masjid stand out as the major attractions in the city. Red Fort is a heritage site in Delhi. Constructed by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan using red sandstone, it has Diwan-i-Khas, Diwan-i-Aam, Lahore Gate, Mumtaz Mahal and Hayat Bakhsh Bagh. Prime Minister hoists national flag and addresses the nation on Independence Day on August15 at this site every year. India Gate, Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple, Raj Ghat (Mahatma Gandhi Samadhi), Birla Mandir, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, Parliament House, Rashtrapati Bhavan and Rajpath are the relatively new sightseeing destinations. Other tourist destinations include Humayun's Tomb, Lotus Temple, ISKCON Temple, Jantar Mantar, National Museum, International Dolls Museum, National Zoological Park, National Railway Museum, Teen Murti Bhavan, Lodhi Garden and Safdarjung's Tomb.Shirdi does not have an airport. Thus the travellers going from Shirdi to Delhi will have to travel to Mumbai by rail or road to catch a flight to Delhi. Alternately travellers can first go to Pune by rail or road and then catch a flight from there to Delhi. This route is more convenient since Pune is nearer to Shirdi.The best way to reach Delhi from Shirdi is by rail. There are two railway stations near Shirdi. But no train is available from there to Delhi. The best way travellers can go to Delhi by rail is to reach Manmad, which is situated 58 km from Shirdi by road, and catch a train to the national capital. Manmad lies on Mumbai-Delhi trunk route. Among the daily trains from Manmad to Delhi are Eranakulam Nizamuddin Mangala Lakshadweep Express (No. 11267), Mumbai CST-Firozepur Punjab Mail (No.12137), Dadar-Amritsar Express (No. 11057) and Pune-Jammu Tavi Express (No. 11077). The train journey from Manmad to Delhi takes more than 24 hours. Travel by road from Shirdi to Delhi may be tiresome since it takes more than 24 hours to cover a distance of about 1300 km.
