British detective novelist Conan Doyle suffered from severe insomnia because he overstrained his nerves. The doctor told him to drink a glass of gin at bedtime. He followed the doctor’s advice and it did work. In the next ten years, no matter he was insomnic or not, he got used to drinking a glass of gin at bedtime. The window was still windy and snowy and the street was empty, so it is impossible to hire a carriage. But the habit stimulated his strong desire from the bottom of his heart. At the moment, the feeling of drinking gin constantly eroded him, so he put on his coat and tied collar, preparing to go out. When he stretched out his hand to take the hat, he stopped, stared the frog out of the window and suddenly realized that his behavior was illogical, even absurd: As a so –called wise man who gained reputation and was clam and rational enough to analyze and educate others,, he should leave the comfortable hotel in the midnight so as to get a glass of wine. Conan Doyle began to ponder and realized he already cultivated a habit, which made him become willing to sacrifice comfort to satisfy himself. Nevertheless, the habit is not good, or even did harm to him. His inspiration made him sober and he immediately made up to get rid of it. He put the empty bottle into the garbage can, took off his clothes with a relief and turned off the light. After several minutes, he slept deeply and sweetly. From that night on he never drank a glass of wine and had no desire to drink.
