I was recently contacted by a person who has a capture page for a website, and he wanted to know how article submissions could help his site and if a capture page could rank highly in Google. First of all, let's cover what a capture page is. A capture page is a one page web site that is mainly designed to capture email addresses. The page will typically have a box where a viewer can input his or her name and email address. There is usually very little content on the page--the amount of information that is given is just enough to make someone want to sign up for whatever the webpage owner is offering (a newsletter, a free report, an e-course, etc.). Capture pages are common with people who are marketing affiliate products, as was the person who asked this question of me. If you are an affiliate marketer and have a capture page, this subject may be useful to you. Can A Capture Page Get A High Ranking? Google looks for pages that offer true value and offer quality content, so it is unlikely that a capture page would be able to earn a top spot in Google's rankings. Article marketing is useful in helping Google to understand what a web page is about via the content on the page and the keyword linking. By sending Google a clear message about what the page is about, it helps the web page get a higher ranking. But, in order to send that message to Google, the web page has to offer real value. That is where the capture page will usually run into trouble--it usually doesn't offer enough value, so it's not likely to be able to achieve a high ranking. The next logical question is: What about a capture page that is keyword optimized and marketed with articles? Does that one stand a chance of ranking on page one in Google? Maybe a few years back you would be able to get on page one with that strategy, but Google has evolved and now uses much more data to determine its rankings. They take into consideration how long a viewer looks at your site, how much they click the links on your site, and of course they also consider the content on your site. In the past, you may have been able to land on page one with just an optimized capture page and article submissions, but that's unlikely these days. It really depends on what keywords you're targeting though (how competitive they are) and the value of the websites you're in competition with for those keywords. It helps to remember that search engine traffic is just one type of traffic, and there are other sources. While it would be difficult (to say the least) to get a capture page to rank highly enough to generate a significant amount of traffic, you could still attract website visitors from article submissions (with people reading the articles and then clicking the link in your resource box). You could also get traffic from posting videos and doing press releases. All of these methods will produce links that will continue to funnel traffic to your site over the long term. There is also paid traffic--you just need to pay attention to the cost and to how much money the paid traffic is bringing you, and be sure that you're not paying more than the value of the customer over the long term. If you're looking to attract long term traffic via search engines though, you'll probably need a website that has more quality content. To get around this you could create a companion website (such as a blog) that offers regularly updated quality content, and then use article submissions to market the blog. The blog would link to the capture page, and you could funnel traffic to the capture page from the high ranking blog. That's one possibility. Or, you could leave the capture page as it is and be satisfied with direct traffic from articles submissions, press releases, videos, paid traffic and such.
