Are you a new freelance writer who's worrying about the competition? Relax. To all intents and purposes, your only competition is with yourself. You're unique, and so are your clients: you just need to find the perfect clients for YOU. Here are four steps to boosting your freelance writing income, and beating your "competition." 1. Get Known: Attract the Perfect Clients for You Your first aim as a writer is to become known: to have prospective clients recognize your name. This is vital. There are many so-called "writers" online who'd struggle to write a comprehensible shopping list. Your prospects have been burned by these people. Therefore, you attract the perfect clients for you by building your name, so that your name engenders trust. This means marketing, and yes, marketing is work and drudgery, but the benefits are enormous. 2. Devote 50 Per Cent of Your Time to Marketing To get known, you need to spend at least 50 per cent of the time you have available for writing in marketing your writing services. In the beginning, spend all of your time marketing, until you have a stable of regular clients. Please don't stop marketing once you have clients. As you grow in skill, you'll work with clients who need those skills, and as your skills become ever more refined, you'll attract higher-paying clients. 3. Develop Your Writing Skills: Spend Time Learning Every Day Your writing skills develop naturally, just because you're writing more. However, there are other skills you need to learn. For example, you need to know how to get a Web site online quickly, within hours; how to manage a press campaign; how to run a Pay Per Click campaign... the more you know, the more your opportunities increase. The time you spend learning will be repaid a million times over; as with marketing, it's essential. 4. Add Value to Your Writing Offerings Your clients are people with needs and responsibilities. As you write for them, you'll get to know and understand their needs. If you add value to your writing services, you'll keep clients forever. (Some of my clients have been with me for a decade and more.) How do you add value? In simple ways, like being utterly reliable and keeping your deadlines. In more complex ways, by going beyond your brief (project description.) For example, when writing Web articles, I advise my coaching students to add a meta description tag, and keywords tag, to each article -- it adds value. It takes just moments, and your clients appreciate it. Ultimately, the reason you spend time in studying, is so that you can add value to your freelance writing services. Remember, you're unique, and so are your clients. Compete with yourself to provide the best freelance writing services you can, and you'll never need to concern yourself with competition. lab report writing
