The Minar of Delhi is surrounded by a lush green garden, which makes it an ideal leisurely place for visitors anytime. There are totally 379 steps around this tall tower which are required to be climbed in order to reach the top. The way to top is now closed following a stampede in 1981, in which several small school children had died and several others injured. Another taller tower adjacent to Qutub Minar is named Alai Minar which is somewhat tilted in one direction. Qutab Minar is one of the most favourite destinations of tourists. It is India's most visited monument attracting around 3.9 million visitors every year. Qutab Minar is the tallest and ever attractive monument of Delhi which can be seen from most parts of the city and is the pride of Delhi. Qutub Minar is also a World Heritage Site which has survived the ravages of time impressively. The tall minaret was originally constructed in 1192 by Qutab-ud-din Aibak and later, it was completed by his successor Iltutmish. This soaring conical tower is an exquisite example of Indo-Islamic Afghan architecture. Without doubt, Qutab Minar is another great masterpiece of Mughal architecture. It has a number of floors or storeys which has beautiful carvings like the one on the tomb of Iltutmish. There are many inscriptions all round the tower and these inscriptions reveal that Iltutmish are responsible for the finishing of this tower. The structure of the wall is made as such that it widens from top to bottom, just to make the minar stronger. If one observe closely, can see the verses from the holy Qur'an carved on sandstone walls of Qutub Minar. This monument serves the purpose of calling people for prayer in the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque. This tower is an embodiment of victory; it is a monument that signifies the might of Islam, or a tower for keeping a check for defense. Over the years too many damages have happened to this mighty tower, natural calamities like earthquakes had badly affected Minar. It is not as erect as it used to be because of wears and tears over the past several years. Closely looking at it, you can see it is somewhat tilted towards one side. The minar is very sincerely looked after by the authorities much like the same as other historic monuments in the country. There are other interesting places to visit near Qutub Minar. The Qutub complex houses the iron wonder nearby. The Iron Pillar is one of the metallurgical interests of the world. It is a thing to study as well as famous tourist destination.
