Somnath Temple is located in Gujarat

Travel & Tourism
An ancient temple, the Somnath temple, being a Jyothirlinga is a representation of Lord Shiva in his endless form. The jyotirlinga are said to be a wholesome reality, out of which Shiva appears. The jyothirlinga shrines, thus, are places where Shiva appears as a fiery column of light. Originally there were 64 jyothirlingas of which 12 are considered to be highly auspicious and holy. Each of the twelve jyothirlinga sites takes the name of the presiding deity – and a different manifestation of Shiva. The twelve jyothirlinga are Somnath in Gujarat, Mallikarjuna at Srisailam in Andra Pradesh, Mahakaleswar at Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh, Kedarnath in Himalayas, Bhimashankar in Maharastra, Viswanath at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Triambakeshwar in Maharastra, vaijanath temple in maharashtra, Nageswar at Dwarka in Gujarat, Rameshwar at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu and Grishneshwar at Aurangabad in Maharastra. The Somnath Temple is located in the Prabhas Kshetra, close to Veraval in Saurashtra in Gujarat, along the west coast of India. One of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Somnath means ‘The Protector of the Moon’. The Somnath Temple is often called ‘The Shrine Eternal’ as it was destroyed six times by Muslim conquerors. It was finally rebuilt in November 1947, when Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel visited the area for the integration of Junagadh. After his death, K. M. Munshi, another minister of the Government of India, took up the charge of rebuilding the shrine. The first and original temple of Somnath is said to have been existed before the beginning of the Common Era. The second temple was built by the Yadava kings of Vallabhi around 649 CE. In 725 CE, Junayad, the Arab governor of Sind, destroyed the second temple. The Gurjara Pratihara king Nagabhata II constructed the third temple in 815. In 1024 CE, the temple was again destroyed by Mahmud of Ghazni, only to be re-built between 1026 and 1042. In 1296 CE, the temple was once again ruined by Sultan Allauddin Khilji's army. Then the temple was rebuilt by Mahipala Deva, in 1308 AD. In 1375 CE, the temple was again destroyed by Muzaffar Shah I and In 1451 CE, by Mahmud Begda. In 1701 CE, it was the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb who destroyed the temple to build a mosque. Later the Somnath temple was rebuilt in 1783 AD. The present Somnath temple, which was built under the supervision of Patel and Munshi, is built in the Chalukya style of temple architecture or Kailash Mahameru Prasad Style and showcases the skill of the Sompura Salats, Gujarat's master masons. A unique feature of the temple is that it is situated at such a place that there is no land in straight-line between Somnath seashore till Antarctica.
