The Colonial Hotels in India

Travel & Tourism,Business
India, a land of mysticism and rich diversities, offers a myriad of magical, unforgettable experiences for tourists. The varied culture and traditions, historical customs, scenic beauties and the lip-smacking culinary delights of the nation combine to lend a distinct, savory flavor to the country.

People come from far and wide to enjoy a first-hand experience of the well-known Indian customs, beauty and hospitality. Being one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the world, India offers many convenient and luxurious accommodation options for visitors. Heritage hotels are generally the preferred choice for most tourists, primarily due to their rich cultural and historical backgrounds. Some of the most noteworthy colonial hotels in India are:

• Rambagh Palace, Jaipur – Rambagh palace was built in 1835 AD by the Queen of England, for her favorite lady aide, Kesar Badaran. In 1957, it was transformed into a hotel by Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II. It was bought by the Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces in 1972. The Palace is referred to as the ‘Jewel of Jaipur’.

• Windamere Hotel, Darjeeling – Built in the 19th century, Windamere Hotel was initially used as a home for the unmarried tea-planters of Scottish and English origin. Just before the start of the Second World War, it was changed into a hotel. The ambience, décor, and the interiors of this hotel speak of a mystic, bygone era. It enjoys immense popularity among people who are willing to wallow in the fantastic traditional environment and historical customs of this place. One of the most interesting spots inside the hotel is the Ada Villa. Removed from the modern-day cacophony of telephones, mobile handsets and television, this is the place to be, if you wish to be virtually transported to a time that has long gone by.

• The Oberoi Grand Hotel, Kolkata – One of the oldest hotels of the city, The Oberoi Grand Hotel in Kolkata boasts of grand cultural heritage. It has been present for the last 125 years and is truly a sight to behold. The white exterior of the hotel is reflective of the quiet calmness it exudes, even in one of the busiest streets in the city. The interior of the hotel provides top-class comfort, convenience and privacy for tired souls, who wish to take a break from the hustle-bustle outside the hotel. Evidences of splendid British architectural techniques are still evident at this hotel.

• Wallwood Garden, Coonoor – Wallwood Garden, in Coonoor, was built by a Scottish Major General more than a hundred years ago. It was sold to a British couple at a later date, and is now run by the Neemrana Group. Although it is primarily a hotel, it has practically all the amenities of a good guest house. Wallwood constantly strives to ensure complete comfort of all its guests, providing them with a welcome break from the everyday rush of life. The architecture of the hotel bears significant old-world charm as well.

• Hotel Tiracol Fort Heritage, Goa - This hotel was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese merchants. It is one of the best and most renowned colonial hotels in India, and boasts of a large number of guests all round the year.
