History of Watches

The history of time keeping is an interesting one. Before watches were ever invented, people still needed to know the time and they used shadows and the sun’s position to tell the time. They would look at their shadows to estimate what time it was. The position of the sun, too, was used to tell time. It is perhaps for this reason that the earliest time keeping devices relied solely on the sun’s shadow. Since then, different devices have been used such as the infamous hour glass. The candle clock was also used and it was simply a candle with markings to point out the duration of time that had passed. The candle clock came in handy during cold seasons when the sun could not be relied upon to tell the time.

Entry of Watches

Fast forward to 1504 where a man called Peter Henlein is said to have invented the first pocket watch. His invention led to an era where people begun fastening watches around their necks and even in clothing. Though they are believed to have kept time poorly, the rich mainly wore the watches. Pocket watches eventually led to the invention of the wristwatch in 1868. The invention by Patek Phillipe was called a wristlet and mainly to be worn just by women. Eventually in 1094, the men’s watch came into existence and gained massive attention as it was much more convenient than constantly pulling out a pocket watch.

Main Types of Watches

Today, the watch has evolved and we now have various kinds. The following are the different types of watches used in modern day:

Analogue Watch:
The analogue watch is the most common and easy to use. It uses hands or moving devices to tell the time.

Chronograph Watch:
A chronograph watch can be either analogue or digital. It however has more features than the average watch, and can be used as a stop watch that can be started, paused and even reset. This function can be done hourly, by the minute, second and fraction of a second as well.

Digital Watch:

The digital watch is modern and does not require the use of hands or moving parts to tell the time. The time is simply displayed on the screen using a Liquid Crystal Display simply known as LCD or an LED screen known in full as Light Emitting Diode. The digital watch is bound to evolve further as technology advances.

Watches for Different Occasions

Today, the watch is not mainly worn for its time telling function but as an accessory and fashion statement. This is evident with the different types of designer watches easily available in the market. Having a digital, analogue or chronograph watch is simply not enough. There are other things you need to consider before wearing your watch. The watch you wear to the office is not the same one you will wear when relaxing over the weekend. Below are different the different kinds of watches for different occasions.

Sports Watch:
These are preferred by athletes because they tell exactly how fast you are moving. They have the ability to measure time laps and are extremely durable.

Casual Watch:
These kinds of watches come in different shapes and sizes. They are trendy pieces which you can use when dressing down or chilling with family and friends.

Formal Watch:
A formal watch has to be simple in design and subtle in colour. The dials are usually very clear and can have features such as an in built calendar as well as alarm to help you be on time for meetings or appointments.

Watches are made using different kinds of straps and these could vary from metal, leather, rubber or even silicon. Metal watches are more durable and can be made using different metals such as Gold, Silver, Steel, and Platinum, just to mention but a few. When buying a watch, make sure that you wear it according to the occasion. Designer watches are much sought after and one can easily find them online or at exclusive stores.

Summary

Watches are timeless pieces that are not going out of style any time in the near future. They have evolved over time based on how and why we wear them. The use of a pocket watch is now in vogue and time can only tell where the watch revolution takes us.
