Chidambaram is an industrial city in the state of Tamil Nadu in the southern part of India. It is the district headquarters of the Cuddalore district and is located in the eastern part of the state. The city is at a distance of 58 km from Pondicherry and is also referred to as known as ‘Thillai’ because it was initially a forest of Thillai shrubs. Apart from its many industries, the city is known for the many temples it has. The city is holds an important place in history as its famous temples find mention in the Hindu religious scriptures. It is a site of pilgrimage for Shaivites and Vaishnavites. This temple town is one of the five Shaivite Mukti Sthalams and is host to the festival of Natyanjali, in which many prominent dancers opening the propitious occasion of MahaShivratri, in the month of February. Chitambaram is known for its many wonderful Hindu temples. The city is home to the Chidambaram Temple, also known as the Thillai Nataraja Temple, is one of the famous temples dedicated to Lord Shiva in his form as Nataraja. The famous Natyanjali festival is held in the temple complex every year during the festival of Maha Shivaratri. Another famous themples is the Arulmigu Thillai Kali Amman Temple which is located to the north of the world famous Nataraja Temple and is dedicated to Goddess Kali. Some of the other famous temples in Chitambaram include Sirai meetta Vinayagar Temple, Kothandaramar Temple, Anandheeswaran Temple, Thagam Theertha Pillayar Temple, Elamayakkinar Temple, Nataraja Temple, Anjaneyar Temple, Selliamman Temple, Kamatchiamman Temple, Keezhatheru Mariamman Temple, Mariamman Temple, Thillaikaliamman Temple and Drowpathiamman Temple. Another important tourist destination in Chidambaram is the Pitchavaram Backwaters which is an amazing picnic spot with a chance to explore the backwaters. The famous Annamalai University is located in this city.While in the city, one can also visit the market areas to see and purchase the different handicraft items.The city is holds an important place in history as its famous temples find mention in the Hindu religious scriptures. It is a site of pilgrimage for Shaivites and Vaishnavites. The best time to visit the city is during the months of October to March since the weather is pleasant and comfortable. Summers in Chidambaram are hot and continues from March to May. Winters are from December to February and are mild and pleasant.
