Resources for Choosing Keywords for your Website

Website Design,Website Promotion
Did you know that more than 80% of all online transactions begin with a keyword search? To compete and bring traffic to your website, you will need to utilize all the relevant keywords you can. However, it’s not all about getting loads of traffic to your website.

This is where keyword research comes into play. With keyword research, you can not only find what web searchers are actively seeking, but also predict shifts in demand, and respond to changing market conditions to produce products and services, which will be in high demand.

Selecting Keywords for your Website Did you know that more than 80% of all online transactions begin with a keyword search? To compete and bring traffic to your website, you will need to utilize all the relevant keywords you can. However, it’s not all about getting loads of traffic to your website. Rather, it’s about getting the right kind of traffic to your website – your demographic. This is where keyword research comes into play. With keyword research, you can not only find what web searchers are actively seeking, but also predict shifts in demand, and respond to changing market conditions to produce products and services, which will be in high demand. So, it won’t be an exaggeration to say that the choice of keywords can break or make your business.

Resources for choosing keywords Whether you are looking for keywords or keyword phrases, you can use the following resources to list keywords that have a high demand for your market:

Google Adwords’ Keyword Tool: This is a great starting point for your research to find suitable SEO keywords. Apart from suggesting keywords, this tool also provides estimated search volumes, and predicts the expenditure of running paid campaigns for the specific terms. If you want to check the search volume for a particular keyword, make sure to set the “Match Type” to [Exact] and take a close look at the column under “Local Monthly Searches.” However, you should remember that these figures stand for total searches, and depending on your click-through rate and ranking, the real number of visitors you get for these keywords will typically be much lower.

Google Trends: Google Insights for Search and Google Trends have been redesigned and combined into this single powerful tool. You can type in one or more terms to explore search volumes, and compare the popularity of specific search terms across regions and over time. This tool can also help in predicting keyword demands, which in turn will aid you in selecting the right keywords for your business.

Bing Ads Intelligence: If you want to determine the performance of relevant keywords on the Yahoo! Bing Network, this is a powerful tool that allows you to get useful insights to build and expand on your keyword list.

Rank Checker: Enter your keyword or phrase and your domain. This tool let’s you know what position you rank on Google, Yahoo! and Bing search engine results. Also gives you suggestions for related keyword terms.

Wordtracker: This free keyword tool lets you select relevant keywords for your business to attract more targeted traffic and helps you to better understand the needs of your target clientele. However, you will need to register for a free account to use this tool.

Keyword Discovery: You can type a seed keyword in the search box and this tool will generate the top 100 keywords for you.

Keyword Density: A great tool to evaluate what keywords you use most on your web pages. This should offer some insight into what keywords you should be using more or less of in your content and meta-tags.

Finalizing your keyword list Sitting with a list of 100 keywords won’t get you anywhere. Once you have made a preliminary list using the above tools, you need a list about 15-20 keywords from the list, which you can use in different pages of your website. Here’s a guide to do this:

Ask yourself some questions: To find the most relevant and useful keywords, ask these questions: Are the chosen keywords relevant to the content of your website? By using the keywords, will searchers find what they are looking for on your site? Will the search results of what they find on your website satisfy them? Will such traffic get converted into financial rewards or help you to achieve other organizational goals? If your answer is a resounding YES to all these questions, then proceed.

Search the keywords in major engines: Once you have listed your keywords, search them in major search engines to find which websites/businesses already have a high rank for them. This will give you a clear insight into the level of competition and how difficult it would be to rank well for the chosen terms/phrases. You should also check how many paid ads are placed to the right of the organic results for you chosen keyword. If you find too many of these ads, it means that your chosen term/phrase is a highly profitable and a conversion-prone keyword.

Test the waters with a sample campaign: You can buy a sample campaign at Bing Adcenter and/or Google AdWords to check how well your keywords convert users into customers.

Assess the value of each keyword: Depending on the data you have collected from your test campaigns, you can determine the exact worth of your keywords. For example, if your search ad generated 4,000 impressions, of which 100 visitors landed at your site and 2 have converted for total profit (it’s not revenue) of $200, then a single visitor for that keyword is worth $2 to your business. Those 4,000 impressions in 24 hours could generate a potential click-through rate of anywhere between 18-36%, which in turn would mean 720-1440 visits per day, at $2 each!

No wonder why businesses love picking up SEO friendly keywords and invest a lot of time in search marketing. However, you should not rely solely on keywords as with recent Google updates, keywords no longer hold as much weight as they used to in earlier days of internet ranking.

Creating a search engine friendly web design, traffic funnels, content, social media marketing, meta information, and much more can affect your ranking. This is why you need a well balanced marketing campaign to consider all these aspects to get your website ranked and not focus solely on keywords.
